How come Vietnam as a 3rd world country has a low crime rate? Even lower than Japan. Is there something I am missing because usually poor countries should have more crime due to desperation.

QUOTE
The crime rate in Vietnam is low compared to industrialized countries. An analysis was done using INTERPOL data for Vietnam. For purpose of comparison, data were drawn for the seven offenses used to compute the United States FBI's index of crime. Index offenses include murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft. The combined total of these offenses constitutes the Index used for trend calculation purposes. Vietnam will be compared with Japan (country with a low crime rate) and USA (country with a high crime rate). According to the INTERPOL data, for murder, the rate in 2000 was 1.08 per 100,000 population for Vietnam, 1.10 for Japan, and 5.51 for USA. For rape, the rate in 2000 was 1.64 for Vietnam, compared with 1.78 for Japan and 32.05 for USA. For robbery, the rate in 2000 was 1.48 for Vietnam, 4.08 for Japan, and 144.92 for USA.

Parents beat their kids in most countries. I don't think that's it. I think it might be because of the many police in Vietnam by the Commies.

I believed Russia today has more crimes today than during when it was firmly in the control of the commies there.

I believe child abuse does happen in the US. From what I hear it's even worse, with some children getting molested by their father. I think this is unheard of in Vietnam.

Cultural values coupled with harsh laws for criminals. That's why we have an low crime rate. You get the death penalty for committing serious crimes in Viet Nam. I think that's great. Not like the laws in most western countries, where you get probation for committing murder.

I was reading a blog by some girl a while ago and she admitted that as a woman she felt safe to go out onto the streets by herself in Vietnam at night.

asian countries usually have lower crime rate than other countries, there are plenty of statistics available if you go and look for it. china & korea also have low crime rate.

by crimes, they probably mean serious crimes only. because i know when it comes to minor offences like traffic offences, vietnam possibly has the highest rate in the world.

The above article mentions crimes as murder, robbery, and rape.

Yeah, traffice offences, Vietnamese motorists just never wear helmet at all. I think the authority has given up about telling people to wear helmet already.

lol man traffic offenses aren't real crimes.

I just hope as Vietnam starts becoming less of a police state and opens up, the crime rate will be relatively the same or less.

serious crimes...yes, i believe vietnam has lower crime rate...i live there and here & my uncle is a lawyer in vietnam.

with regards to traffic offences...it is so terrible. when the road is so crowded, noone needs to tell anyone, everyone runs over the pavement to go faster. it is the people's will that matters here. but nobody gives a dam, because vietnam has liberised so quick in every front that people feel so free (???). And they dont realise that to have a traffic system function properly, people need to respect one-another on the road.

Maybe, I dunno know. But how many times have you heard of anyone getting murdered or raped in Vietnam?

Also if VN government really wanted to create a postive image they would not have admitted that GDP per capita of Vietnam was just $600 a year. GDP is more important than crime rate in my opinion for displaying your leadership.
