Cambodian PM offers citizenship to Jolie

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen on Tuesday offered Cambodian citizenship to US film star Angelina Jolie in honour of her humanitarian work and because she adopted a son here, the actress and officials said.


The Oscar-winning actress met with the premier primarily to discuss deforestation during one of her frequent visits to the kingdom, where she adopted her two-year-old son Maddox, but Hun Sen raised the issue, she said.

"He did mention giving me Cambodian citizenship and I would be honoured ... I would be thrilled and very, very honoured. I’m sure I’ll be moving forward to actually receiving that," Jolie told reporters.

Hun Sen’s assistant Eang Sophalleth confirmed that an offer was made. "The prime minister welcomed her to take up Cambodian citizenship if she would like it, because she has been working on humanitarian issues in Cambodia for years and also because she is the mother of a Cambodian boy," he said.

The 28-year-old actress fell in love with Cambodia when shooting the 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider at the famed Angkor Wat temple complex and adopted Maddox after meeting him at an orphanage in November the same year.

She also said she was searching for a Khmer language teacher to travel with her son so he would learn his mother tongue. "I’m looking for someone to work with me in Europe and the States, to travel with me to help teach him Khmer because I’m not doing very good," she said.

"I always want to bring Maddox back to Cambodia as often as possible because I want him to know he’s Cambodian and be proud of that."

A single mother after divorcing actor Billy Bob Thornton, she won an Academy Award in 2000 for her role in Girl, Interrupted .
