ASEAN countries:

Malaysia: majority are malay..have a long time dispute with singapore..

Indonesia: have the 4th largest population in the world after US..majority are muslims..have lots of islands..have many similarities with Malaysia in terms of language, culture, etc..natural disasters keep happening over there from time to time..

Filipina: they speak tagalog..a christian country..gloria macapagal arroyo..milf in mindanao..jose rizal..

Brunei: a very rich country..have lots of oils over there..I've heard the palace was made by gold(not sure)..speak malay..very conservative islamic country..the sultan is super rich..

Singapore: once a state in Malaysia..majority chinese..very advance in technology, economy n so on..

Thailand: thaksin..riot is south thailand..prostitution..bangkok..the girls are hot..ong bak movie..the three-wheels vehicle(I don't know what it is called)..

Kemboja: I think there was a civil war back there some few years ago..don't know much about this country..

Vietnam: obviously the vietnam war..the only war that america lost..that's it

Laos: don't know a thing

Myanmar: I think they have a king over there..don't know much

I think I have covered all the countries there are right..sorry if I miss any..

Yeah, I agree. Education. Beside Tangy's great idea of raising the issue of joint ASEAN syllabus, I'm always thinking about giving more ways to exchange students, let them learn each other's culture, history and society.

Personally, I wouldn't mind giving personal tours of Indonesia to my ASEAN friends from the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar. Not Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei, though! They are capable of doing that on themselves! biggrin.gif Right, Tangy? icon_wink.gif

But of course, something as exciting as Amazing Race is a great alternative! Exciting and educative! biggthumpup.gif

Bhaski, you could start a backpackers travel agent for asian bckpackers across the archipelago? i remember Furan mentioned how she wished she could go to Bali but she was waiting for her sister to go with her, instead of going there alone... if she had a local backpackers travel agency that can help her with all the info and losmen to stay and recommend some activities for the single asian traveller, that would be so cool... biggthumpup.gif

i think most asians are just too scared to go backpacking on their own, eesepcially their parents...

Sounds interesting! You and I should talk about this in a more serious manner... as for me, the reason why I haven't done that is just because I don't have the money. Yeah, it's call backpacking, but it still needs money. That's why you don't see a lot of poor people of poor countries (such as myself) going around the world backpacking embarassedlaugh.gif

haha... of cuz everything needs money.. but guess what? you can do it with other people's money, it's even better!!! for example... hwabout producing a Lonely Planet guide that is targetted for the Indo market?? go to the losmen, shops, warungs, buses, trains and planes and offer to list them in your guidebook for a comission or a free night or trasnport?? come on, bhas! biggthumpup.gif

I totally agree with Tangy, Bhas, 'n Peccy, we should learn more about ASEAN and do the bacpacking things.... beerchug.gif-thumbup
We did learn about ASEAN during hmm.... third grade of junior high... but that's not enough...... We only forced to memorize the basic, when it was formed in 1967 in Bangkok, 5 original founding countries, etc....

Oh yeah about bacpacking, most Indonesian did this chapter of adventourous life during their college years.... I meant in Highschool parents still rarely gave that much liberty for a kid to travel away from home. Btw, during Highschool I go to my friend's village near in Purworejo. a remote village with no electricity. Nice traditional way of life. But most of us (kids at that time) face similar problems, lack of money.... (maklum, namanya juga pelajar/mahasiswa.... embarassedlaugh.gif ).
Most of 'em go to fave spots like Yogya, Bali, or (few of them lucky enough to go as far as) Lombok. Or joining "pecinta alam" during highschool or college, and hike mountains in Java like Gede-Pangrango (basic... embarassedlaugh.gif ), Salak or Ciremai (I only manage get to the slopes), Pangandaran and Parangtritis beach....
My hardcore hiker friends get as far as Ujung Kulon national park, the top of mount Semeru East Java, Agung Bali, Rinjani Lombok and Kerinci, West Sumatra. (He said on top of Rinjani Lombok during clear sunrise, you can see 3 volcano at the same time on the different islands, Agung and Batur in Bali, and Semeru in Java, awesome). biggthumpup.gif
Then backpacking around Java (Surabaya, Yogya, Kuningan, Bandung) during my last job brake, quite nice.....

Then when you graduate, get a new job, you find yourself financially can afford and ready to have backpacking adventure, but there's NO TIME.... bawling.gif .
Moreover if you settle down and get married, you have to be satisfied with parks, zoo, local swimming pools, and theme parks.... icon_neutral.gif .

You like bikes....riding bikes around the region, there are many bike clubs which is affiliated with each country in the region. My malaysian fren - a working colleague in Spore juz email to everyone is each country and they will be on standby for your arrivals.....and they accompany you around. That is really great. A fren of mine rode from Singapore all the way to cambodia on his african twin and he says the networking within the bikers fraternity really help him a lot to go places and feeling safe

Yeah, let's make one! Let's have a community in each ASEAN country that will contribute to this project! How about starting from AF members in ASEAN clan?

Bike? You mean motorcycles or bicycles? No matter... I think the main object of back-packing should be traveling that can be done by anyone, not just for specific people with specific interest....

on topic :
my thinking about SEA countries in e! world perspective

Malaysia : Siti Nurhaliza and Datuk K, invated by indo bands, have tons of bloggers...

Spore : where MTV Asia headquarter placed...allow its people to be naked in mag cover...

Brunei Darussalam : have a Sultan who have tons of wives whereas their population is just a small number...where do the sultan found women?...cancelled Agnes Monica concert because her outfit and style isnt appropriate for their culture...

Thailand : Shutter, Nang Nak, has the strongest film industry in SEA...have tons of ladyboy who's prettier than many ladies ive seen, Tata Young ( is she "she" or "he"?)

Phillipine : Regine Velasquez, Xtian Bautista, western minded, beautiful ladies and hot hunks.....

Cambodia : Maddox (Angelina Jolie Foster Kid), Khmer Rouge

Myanmar : where people speak Myanmar lingo

Laos : where Britney Spears wasnt born...

Vietnam : where vietnamesse born
