Ramalan Jayabaya Memunculkan Optimisme

(GSA)

Jayabaya Prophecy has Fueled Optimism

Jakarta, Kompas - Jangka Jayabaya, the prophecy about the fate of Indonesian archipelago since eight century ago up until now still living within Indonesian people, especially those who supported Javanese culture, now has brought in to the light to discuss it's relevance. This time the focus is about optimism of the coming of glorious golden age of Indonesian archipelago in this century.

There's optimism and scepticism has arose about this Jayabayan prophecy during symposium "Bedah Jangka Jayabaya" held by National Library of Republic Indonesia in Jakarta, Wednesday (18/7). As the key speaker, Soetarno, the rector of Indonesian Institute of Art, Surakarta, and Hidayat Yudoprawiro, the writer of "The Relevance of Jayabaya Prophecy", with Sudarko Prawiroyudo as the moderator.

"The golden age is foretold to be took place in this century, there's a spesial pre-requisite to make this happen" Hidayat said. The main reason that we took this prophecy seriously is based on how accurate Jayabaya prophecy was on foretold the pre-Independence era before 1945.

This activist of Metaphysic Study Club highlighted Jayabaya's prophecy writings of HA van Hien, Sartono Kartodirdjo, and Brandes version. He also pin-pointed the accuracy of Jayabaya prophecy, including the Japanese occupation, the Independence of Indonesia, the end of Indonesian war of Independence. There's some people that expressed their optimism about the coming of this golden age, but the cautious and criticism to view this prophecy is also needed and respected.

We must be Careful
Budya Pradipta, consultant of Javanese language, literature and culture ask everybody to be careful to discuss about Jayabaya's prophecy. However we can't denied that some people do have "gift" to see beyond human normal senses, gifted by premonition, a power to see some critical event centuries ahead.

"The cautious and carefulness is needed bacause up until now we only know tha Jayabaya's prophecy from secondary source. The original authentic Jayabaya's manuscrips whereabout is unknown," he said.

However, Budya added that the Jayabaya's prophecy about the coming of Indonesian golden age should be greeted as a proposal, a bright alternative of future. That optimism will come into reality if the goverment of Indonesia can make it happen through realistic long term development programme with Jayabaya prophecy fueled the spirit of optimism.

According to Soetarno, Jayabaya is known as the King of Kediri in 12th century AD through scaterred literature manuscripts and insriptions. Most of the writings describe the glorious and peaceful era during his reign. But the mystery is, did Jayabaya write the prophecy by himself or written by another author? because some of the verses is written in later Javanese, although most of writings originated from his era is written in old Javanese. (GSA)

What do you think guys...?
I mean...., as Indonesian or people who put some interest in Indonesia, what will you expect for our nation's future...?
This threads is meant to discuss about Indonesian dreams and Indonesian future.
Is it optimistic brilliance or gloomy...?
Can we make it to be an advance country in Asia...?
Can Indonesia become dominant force in Asia in par with China or India....?
Can Indonesia stay together as one nation despites the separatist and radical movement...?

The topic can be range from socio-economy, politic, culture, ethnic and race, even metaphysic study of premonition prophecy psychic Nostrodamus/Jayabaya style like the article above.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/embarassedlaugh.gif)

You know what, I don't think it will be happening very soon for now, with all the corruption and lack of people who truly are educated and willing to serve. But all of us can do our part of paving the way for the future of our beloved nation (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggthumpup.gif)

Mas Bhas...., actually a century is a quite long time..... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
Lots thing can be achieved in a hundred years.
Just look at the past century, in the 20th century there's two great war WW I and WWII, also cold war.
The invention of flight (aviation) technology has 100 years of history.
The emerging of independent nations including Indonesia. The advent of technology, communications, computers, internets, etc.

Indonesian golden age might be not happen in this decade, next decades or in our lifetime (I might be alive just untill half of this century/2050 and that is good enough though) but I think the optimism is an exciting things. It gave us hope, something to look forward to.
A nations without dreams and hope is a nations decayed and fallen.
And I hope Indonesia will fulfill this ancient prophecy of golden age in waiting.
Although I agree with your criticism, it is healthy to keep us on ground, keep us on right track and not be illusionated with utopian impossible dreams.

Normally, the 'golden age' of any tribe or nation is like the time when trade is skyrocketing and people have enuff to eat, wear, play and create artistic legacies celebrating their existence and their past... so what's the old prophesy said about the 'golden age' then?

Yo? u are a civil servant??? hmmm.... can u tell me your opinion on what Lee Kuan Yew has advised to the Indonesian govt recently below:

QUOTE
MM Lee holds discussions with Indonesian leaders in Jakarta

JAKARTA : Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew has met leading Indonesian personalities in Jakarta.

During a lunch meeting, Mr Lee discussed the state of Indonesia's economy.

The Singapore leader expressed his view that Indonesia should be the leading choice for investors in ASEAN.

But it has to tackle problems with its militant labour and workers' unions.

Jakarta backed down from reforming its labour law after unions threatened a nationwide strike.

The government is said to be working to meet some of the workers' demands.

Sabam Siagan, Board of Directors, The Jakarta Post, said: "He points out that India, China and Vietnam are moving on. Although Indonesia is on the right track and the right microeconomic decisions - but the speed is lacking."

The state of bilateral relations between Indonesia and Singapore was also discussed.

The two neighbours recently signed an extradition treaty and defence cooperation agreement.

But the Indonesian government faces strong opposition from lawmakers who have threatened not to ratify the defence cooperation deal on the grounds that it infringes on the country's sovereignty.

Sabam Siagan said: "He said that the political dynamics is different in Indonesia with the reformasi. So let's be patient and cool down a little."

Earlier Mr Lee met former Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid.

During the half hour meeting, the two leaders discussed bilateral and regional issues.

Mr Abdurrahman Wahid said: "Singaporeans disagree with some of the things done by our leaders. On the other hand, our leaders disagree with some of the things that Singapore does. That's normal."

The Minister Mentor is in Jakarta to deliver a public lecture organised by Citibank.

Later this week, Mr Lee will share his views on Vision 2030, Indonesia's economic development plans. - CNA/ch

Can someone post the Indonesian reports on his visit in jakarta??? Nice to know the viewpoint from the Indo side... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_wink.gif) thx!

The indication of golden age probably exactly like you say above.
With the comparison of Persian Empire, Roman Empire, China during Tang Empire, Islamic Abbassid Empire,
also in Indonesian counterpart; during Majapahit Empire.
People have enough to eat, wear good clothes and enjoyed many luxury items, enjoyed high quality of life.
Trade is soaring, people enjoy relatively peaceful era.
Create monumental achievements, etc.
There's vigorous revival of art, science, any artistics and intelectual aspects.
The cities enjoys cosmopolitant life, many people from various backgrounds flocking to the center of empire celebrating the era of peace and prosperity. Also the "empire" somehow commands great power (military) and exercise it's influence worldwide.

I'm not sure what exactly the prophecy says about this coming of golden age. But I heard the era describes as time of peace and prosperity. Where there's no famine, and natural disasters somehow ceased.
According to Hindu-Javanese mysticism beliefs, a great natural disaster on catastrophic scale often prelude this new era, as the sign of the coming of golden age to "cleanse" the impurities etc. But it also natural catastrophy itself which also can destroy the era of greatness. Weird isn't it.... Ancient writings mentioned about great earhquake during the beginning of Majapahit kingdom, and the priest comfort the villagers, that actually the sign, the beginning of the era of greatness.

Also describes that people don't suffer any injustice treatment. The time when law, justice and order rule (describes as the reign of 'Ratu Adil') people are enjoyed the "gemah ripah loh jinawi" prosperous and fertile life. The "pujangga" (scholars, scientist, literature maestros) will create masterpieces, etc.

Was the Jayabaya Prophecy made during the Majaphahit empire in 8th C?

I just read something that the Majapahit empire was noted by chinese traders as very similar to the samurai period in Japan where they killed people rather easily if they do not follow the fuedal code of behavior..

Was the Jayabaya Prophecy made during the Majaphahit empire in 8th C?

First of all, Jayabaya's reign is waay before the formation of Majapahit Empire. About almost 200 years earlier than Majapahit era.
Jayabaya is a King of Kediri, a kingdom in East Java in 12th century.
Majapahit born in late 13th century AD.

QUOTE
Ratu Joyoboyo, also Sri Mapanji Jayabaya or Jayabhaya, reigned over the kingdom of Kediri in East Java from AD1135 to 1157. He reunified the kingdom after a split that occurred with the death of his predecessor Airlangga. He is also remembered for his just and prosperous rule, and reputed to have been an incarnation of the Hindu deity Vishnu. He is the archetypal Ratu Adil the just king who is reborn during the dark age of reversal "Jaman Edan" at the end of each cosmic cycle to restore social justice, order, and harmony in the world.

The manggala ("prologue") of the famous Kakawin Bhāratayuddha names Joyoboyo as the patron of the two poets, Mpu Sedah and Mpu Panuluh who wrote this work. Joyoboyo is also described as author of the Pralembang Joyoboyo, a prophetic book that played an important role in the Japanese occupation.

When Japan occupied the Netherlands East Indies, in the first weeks of 1942, Indonesians danced in the streets, welcoming the Japanese army as the fulfillment of the prophecy ascribed to Joyoboyo, who foretold the day when white men would one day establish their rule on Java and tyrannize the people for many years – but they would be driven out by the arrival of yellow men from the north. These yellow men, Joyoboyo had predicted, would remain for one crop cycle, and after that Java would be freed from foreign domination. To most of the Javanese, Japan was a liberator: the prophecy had been fulfilled.

The Japanese freed Indonesian nationalists from Dutch prisons and hired them as civil servants and administrators. In the waning days of 1944, however, it was clear that Japan could not win the war. The Japanese officially granted Indonesia its independence on 9 August 1945, and the commander of Japan's Southeast Asian forces appointed future President Sukarno as chairman of the preparatory committee for Indonesian independence. As one account of Indonesian history puts it, "With the minor exception that three crops had been harvested, Jayabaya's prophecy had been realized."

Many believe that the time for the arrival of a new Ratu Adil is near (as the prophecies put it, "when iron wagons could drive without horses and ships could sail through the sky"), and that he will come to rescue and reunite Indonesia after an acute crisis, ushering in the dawn of a new golden age.

Jayabaya made the prophecy about "yellow race invasion" that only last for short period before the coming of independence of archipleago, especialy the island of Java, then he said Java become Javanese again.... Strangely his prophecy came to reality twice.
First the formation of Majapahit prelude with the invasion of Kublai Khan Yuan-Mongol fleet
Second the Japanese occupations in WWII

However the second yellow invasion (Japanese) seems vividly describes in this Jayabaya prophecy as "somehow help get rid the big pale hairy barbarians out from Java" (Dutch/European (IMG:style_emoticons/default/embarassedlaugh.gif) ).
Oh yeah before this yellow invasion, Jayabaya also foreseen the arrival of big pale hairy barbarians who covered with clothes up to their fingertips (European 16th century gloves...?), unlike Javanese fashion in 12th century where men are barechested. This barbarian will exploit Java and rule over natives for quite long time, until the arrival of yellow race, that what he said. It's too much close to known history to view this prophecy as just a coincidence.

Yes.... I've read in history book too about Chinese chronicle describing the Majapahit era.
If I not mistaken the Chinese wrote:

"They lived in great high walled city made from brick. Their houses (roof) are stepped, some are two stories building made from wood. They are a brave and hot headed people, even a little boy already bringing small dagger/sword (keris) with beautifully carved handles (I think very similar to today's Balinese keris) adorned with gold and gems. If they felt offended, there will be a fight and bloodshed will happen. (I think linked to code of honor in that time, Ksatriya code of honor, similar to Samurai warrior class)
They love cockfight and gambling, Their wine is not made from rice nor fruit (grape), but extracted from coconut tree (tuak).
During full moon they love to dance and sing surrounding fire in the village temple (again, similar to Balinese these days).

If a woman (usually rich or beautiful) widowed or still have husband but desired byanother man from another village, a man can ask her to marry him (ofcourse if she still have a husband, the husband will fight this man in duel till death), or if the village (of the woman) oppose, both village (village of the woman and the "horny" man (IMG:style_emoticons/default/embarassedlaugh.gif) ) can involved in some kind of battle play when they fight and yelling "larak-larak" then the people whom won got what they want...." strange custom isn't it...?

I believe it's possible for Indonesia to reach a golden age. I just came back from vacationing in jkt and palembang and saw lots of potentials. That's one of the reason, I'll planning to move there. Now, only if I can find a job in Indonesia that will hire foreigners. (strange, calling myself foreigner despite being asian)

"Can we make it to be an advance country in Asia...?"
With the right policies and development. I've noticed there are a lot of bad planning developments in jkt such as roads, freeways, etc. If those are taken care of and make travelling more efficient, that's a lot of free time available.

"Can Indonesia become dominant force in Asia in par with China or India....?"
Maybe, but that will take a long process. Education is the key and having the right people to run and improve the country.

Sorry for the short replies, not in the mood to write a whole thesis on it. :-)

Thank for the contribution Glut...... Good work...... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggthumpup.gif)

Actually what you post is the part of Jangka Jayabaya that describe the "Jaman Edan" or the age of madness.
The social turmoil before the coming of "Ratu Adil" (The Just Ruler), a Javanese "messiah" that will lead Java back to the golden era and glory, era of justice and prosperity.

Many of these verses describing the "Zaman Edan" is happen today, describing the moral decay of present Indonesian people, especially during crisis and chaos also riots in 1998. The next part is when the good and just ruler will set example for Indonesians and lead this country to prosperity, which is, by many of studies indicated that will happen in 21st century.

Well not that I'm being utopian, dreammy, or unrealistic about this prophecy. But it sorta gave us something to look forward to. A vision to set our goal, and to motivate us to achieve prosperity and justice in this century.
