Malaysia aiming for greater success in space

By CHRISTINA KOH

IPOH: Angkasawan Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor’s safe return from space represents not just a personal success for him but a success for the country and all Malaysians.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said that, usually, only developed nations had the capability to plan missions to outer space.

“We are not developed yet but we are working to achieve more and even greater success towards the year 2020 when we can be a developed nation.

“To achieve that success, we must implement many projects, one of which are projects in the fields of science and space,” he said before launching the Gugusan Manjoi Administration and Commercial Complex here yesterday.

Abdullah said the country was also working with the space agencies of countries like Japan, Russia, Kazakhstan and the United States to benefit from their progress.

“It is my hope that this is not the first and last success. We want this first achievement in space to bring even greater success in the future,” he added.

Saying he was thankful for Dr Sheikh Muszaphar’s safe return, the prime minister noted that the various experiments carried out in space seemed to have gone well.

“The European countries and Japan are interested in knowing the results of the experiments carried out by Dr Sheikh Muszaphar,” Abdullah said.

The Angkasawan had conducted the study of the effects of micro gravity and space radiation on cells and microbes, experiments with proteins, among others.

Abdullah gave an assurance that despite the big expense of sending a Malaysian to space, it did not mean that the Angkasawan programme was a waste.

“It does not mean there won’t be enough funds for other needs although this venture requires a lot of investment.

“We have the funds to carry out the projects and the programmes to bring prosperity to the people and development to the nation,” he said.

First Malaysian in space: It's so good to be home, says Malaysian astronaut

By : Anis Ibrahim reporting from Baikonur

2007/10/23

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak greeting Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre, also known as Star City, where he will undergo therapy to overcome the long stay in micro-gravity conditions. Looking on is Najib’s wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

"I MISSED him so much and I have not hugged him since June. I cannot wait to take my son home to host a thanksgiving feast to honour him for his achievement," were the words from Datin Zuraida Sheikh Ahmad when she saw her son.

She and her husband Datuk Sheikh Mustapha Sheikh Shukor waited for several hours in chilly conditions at the Chakalovsky Air Base when the aircraft carrying their eldest son touched down at 10.36pm local time (2.36am Malaysian time).

Tears welled in her eyes as she waited for Malaysia's first man in space to disembark from the plane. She broke into a grin and waved, wiping her tears.

Dr Muszaphar waved to the crowd, which included families of Fyodor Yurchikhin and Oleg Kotov, the two Russian crew members of the International Space Station.

The Soyuz TMA-10 craft landed 600km off course and thus the reunion between Dr Muszaphar and his parents was delayed.
"We are very grateful to be allowed to enter the airbase," said Sheikh Mustapha. The military airbase has tight security and only a limited number of people were allowed into the airbase and even fewer were allowed on the tarmac.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaludin Jarjis were among the dignitaries present.

When the Russian military transport plane from Kustanai, Kazakhstan, landed, Yurchikhin was the first to emerge, drawing applause from the Russian crowd. Soyuz commander Kotov appeared moments later.

Dr Muszaphar stepped out from the plane in true celebrity style smiling and waving to the crowd.

Malaysian mission flight surgeon Col Dr Zulkeffeli Mat Jusoh assisted him as he walked down the ramp since the 35-year-old orthopaedic surgeon by training had not fully recovered from the micro-gravity condition in space

"It may take a week to fully recover from the micro-gravity condition. He is in good health," said Dr Zulkeffeli.

Malaysia's pioneer spaceman shook hands with Najib and Jamaludin and then kissed and embraced his parents and later his brother who was also present.

"It's so good to be home," he said after kissing his parents' hands.

The reunion was brief as the astronauts were taken away by bus to the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre, also known as Star City, for therapy to overcome the long stay in micro-gravity conditions.

A brass band greeted the crew upon arrival at Star City which lifted everyone's spirits in the cold conditions.

The crew was presented red roses and immediately ushered into the building.

Adik meninggal dunia, Sheikh Muszaphar pulang hari ini

KUALA LUMPUR 27 Okt.

Now they're cosmonauts

2007/11/10

KUALA LUMPUR: National spacemen Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha and Major Dr Faiz Khaleed were on Thursday commissioned as cosmonauts by the Russian government.

The commissioning was done by Anatoly Perminov, the chairman of Roskosmos (Russian National Space Agency), at Star City, Russia at 4pm (8pm in Malaysia).

Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abdul Hanan Alang Endut and National Space Programme director Colonel Dr Zulkeffeli Mat Jusoh were present at the ceremony.

Dr Zulkeffeli, when contacted last night, said that the United States' National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa), through its representative at the commissioning ceremony, also recognized the duo as astronauts.

On Oct 10, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar together with Russian flight engineer Yuri Malenchenko and commander Peggy Wilson from the United States, took off in a Soyuz TMA-11 spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS).
The Malaysian astronaut returned to Earth on Oct 21.

Angkasawan Dr Faiz tidak digalak nikah sebelum 2011

10-11-2007

This is because you are darn stupid to realise the significant of sending our own angkasawan to space. Atleast, one Malaysian, a good & productive citizen at that, has a shot to become & experience of being a cosmonaut. He also conducted resaech in zero-g environment that will benefit the health industry.

Talk c@ck & bull ... ain't get you nowhere!

Hang PC, heard Major Dr Faiz will be send in 2010-2011 space mission & might becoming ISS crew (not visiting spacer) & will be trained at NASA.

How is the Govt. gonna fund this, eh? An offset programme much like the Su-30MKM deal, possibly F-18F Super Hornet?

If that is the case, sweet deal!

He didn't go to the Moon, but International Space Station. He conducted several research that needed to be done in zero-G environment, whose scientific result proved vital to the needs of R&D instry in our nation, inclusing health industry.

On the other hand, what is your contribution to the nation, eh? Only complaining on online forum?

Please tell us how you can spend the money for poor? Every thing is free? Or subsidizing the petrol, rice, wheat, water, electricity, telephone bill, free school, free entrance to university. Or just give them the cash on hand.
Do you want your society to be called subsidized, lazy, stupid society etc.? Come on even China and India also spent their money for many other thing rather than some their poor people.

Of course you want more hi-tech hospitals in every state, district and village even in jungle. You want the government to build more good quality house to shelter the poor. Send their child to school. Give them free clothes, free food, find them a job etc. Even our government hospital now can be considered cheap with good quality and fully equipped. You just have to pay from lowest Rm3 to RM15 for the service depends on what type of illness. In rural areas and districts, most of the medicines are free to the poor. We just cannot keep busy to help the coor, but we need to do something to go forward. Doesnt mean we forget the poor people entirely. Then only we can eliminate the poverty.
