I wonder if they're using a different standard from America. In our middle & high school, of about 550 students I can think of about five who strike me as being seriously obese. In a typical class of about 30 we might have one student I'd call 'fat', four or five more who'd be a bit overweight, and the rest normal to very thin. In fact I think we have at least as many students who are seriously underweight as seriously overweight. In any event, there's no way that at least 55 of our students are 'obese'. I do notice that a lot of students here put on noticeably more weight in their second and third year of high school. They're forced to live such sedentary lives studying all the time and for many junk food is one of few pleasures in life. But when I look at news clips from American schools I just think holy $hit, but what a bunch of porkers, both students and teachers.
I do tend to see a larger proportion of fat little elementary school boys over here - usually insufferable little monsters whose mothers are constantly stuffing food in their little emperors' mouths. QUOTE like mcdonalds, burger king.. ...Lotteria, Popeye's, and fried chicken restaurants on every corner. You'd be surprised how many calories are in instant ramyeon, too. |

if you have a dinner with korean family they always tell kids to eat *more* and some more. and even give you an extra scoop of rice when you are just about to finish up, even if you say: " i am really stuffed." i don't think this is the reason. but i think around 1st grade to 5 th grade, every year, korea school should teach kids about nutrition such as basic food groups and also what is considered junk food. food should be in junk category if it does not contribute to nutrition but can cause harm to boday and mental well being, such as too much, grease, fat, salt, and harmful chemicals ( pesticide, artificial growth agents, etc ). a film strip or slide show about nutrition in the beginning, mid, semester will suffice. also teachers can send note to parents about kids that are obese and starting to fall behind in school work. or gov. can outlaw fast food that exceeds certain limits of junks ( saturated fat, trans fat, msg type of tasty chemicals, etc ).

Dont see this at all in Canada, I can only think of at most 3 or 4 as obese out of 850 in my school.
I doubt the validity of these statistics |

I think the reporter who wrote this is probably confusing chubby and fat with "obese".

When I went to Korea, everyone was bone thin except for a few chubby high school students here and there.
I see lots of fat Korean kids in the US nowadays at school though and as a Korean myself, it's really embarrassing. Fat as in 20-50 lbs overweight. |

QUOTE(enomosiki @ Sep 29 2007, 03:40 AM) I think the reporter who wrote this is probably confusing chubby and fat with "obese". That's probably it. At our school one out of ten students may be overweight, but certainly not that many are obese. Here's a dialogue / listening ex. I recently did with my middle school students for a lesson that concerned giving advice: I Need Some Advice! Sam: Dan, I have a problem Dan: What’s the matter Sam? Sam: Do you think I look fat? I weigh 300 pounds. Dan: Well, yeah, you do look a little heavy. Sam: What do you think I should do about it? Dan: Maybe you should stop eating so much American food. Sam: Really? But I like to eat at McDonald’s every day. Dan: Yes, but why don’t you try Korean food? Sam: Korean food? Would that make me healthier? Dan: I think so. You should give it a try. ![]() What is Sam’s problem? a) he is too tall b) he is too heavy c) he is too tired How heavy is Sam? a) 300 kilograms b) 136 kilograms c) 300 pounds Where does Sam like to eat every day? a) McDonald’s b) KFC c) Lotteria Will Dan’s advice help? a) yes b) no c) maybe What do you think of Dan’s advice? What advice would you give Sam? |
