I love traditional costumes. From the Japanese Junihitoe and Kimono to the Indian Sari. However, I have always wondered: what is the national costume for women in the Philippines?

I watch a lot of pageant shows, and Philippines national costume always varies from pageant to pageant. I think though the Terno, Islamic dresses, Maria Clara and Barrio dresses are most commonly seen. Which do you think should be called "National Dress Of the Philippines"?

A lot of people say Baro't Saya, but err I don't really agree with it. I think it should be the Terno or Maria Clara. Maria Clara because it was widely worn in Luzon and Visayas (from the rich to the poor, I found old pictures of Cebu and everyone were wearing Maria Clara). Terno because it's the most internationally recognized thanks to Imelda Marcos and Beauty queens. During the height of Philippine economy (1960's), the Terno and Traje de Mestiza were popularly worn throughout Philippines.

Also I chose these since they match perfectly with the Barong Tagalog. I don't think the Islamic/Tribal dresses match the Barong Tagalog. The Barrio dresses mostly match with the Camisa de Chino.

Maria Clara

Maria Clara will forever be the national costume for women..
reason..
most dresses are modelled in the MARIA CLARA STYLE..
even at weddings.. some like their wedding gowns to have the maria clara touch...

ever seen the " STA. CRUZAN " Before...
its celebrated around may , along with the " FLORES DE MAYO"..

Ehh I didn't know. Never been thought at class. I was only thought about the Barong Tagalog. I hardly see Filipino women wear Maria Clara dresses though, Barong Tagalog is more common, though Maria Clara is more expensive and elegant.
