Thats surprising, isnt Malaysia also trying to relocate their capital away from KL? I think in Malaysia's case its moving towards a more muslim/islamic city and away from the heavily Chinese populated KL (about 55% of KL's residents are Chinese).
I reckon capital cities should be left alone. So much has been poured into them, then again they could be running out of space with Seoul. Ever realise some capital cities are just stupid? Note: Ottawa, Washington DC and Canberra (the latter is probably a joke...in the middle of nowhere and was established not all THAT long ago)....just has the parliament but not even a politcal centre really. |

Hmm, I don't see the logic in moving. Seoul is the heartbeat of South Korea and one of the most important places on the planet. So it seems odd to move the capital.
fujisan_8 - also Brasilia (to replace Rio de Janeiro) as well.... |

Well Seoul is too economically dominant for the good of Korea. I mean half of the Korean population are like living within the confine of the Seoul metropolis. That's just too much. Let's not even going into how crowded Seoul is and how ugly the highrise apartments are.
Another important factor is Seoul's proximity to the DMZ (demilitarised zone) and within range of the North Korean artillery. Once a war breaks out, all hell will break lose and the North Koreans will bring Seoul and the S Korean economy down to hell with them. It's wise not to put all your eggs into one basket. As for Fujisan, if you know Australian history, you'd realise that Canberra was a compromise for the Sydney-Melbourne rivalry to be the Capital city of Australia. I would love Sydney to be both the political and economic capital but that's a different point altogether. |

The Gongju-Yeongi area about 100km South of Seoul was chosen as the site of our new capital out of 4 possible candidates. There's nothing but farmland there, and they plan to build a city of 500,000 totally from scratch. It's a 20 year endeavour and will cost an upward of $100 billion+ (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/eek.gif) (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/eek.gif) (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/eek.gif) (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/eek.gif) (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/eek.gif)

The Capital is where your Nation's Government base their Headquarters at.
Even if the Government moves their HQ Base, The Economic value of Seoul will still be present Even if Capital is moved. Seoul will still be a large Economic Metropolis. If the North Koreans capture this Metropolis city, its very Good for them. They should just create a "Back-Up" Capital, because taking over the Capital does not mean that they win the entire war. You still need to have a base of operation, Commanding HQ centre where you control your unoccupied territory. |

Personally, I think President Roh Moo Hyun can just about fu-k up even a cup of coffee, so I've never been too thrilled with this.
But who knows, this very might be the only thing positive he's done for the county during his tenure as president... but I doubt it. |

This is not a matter of confidence or doubt, this is pure utter madness. Who's got $100 billion? Honestly? How long can he go on taxing big business and the wealthy with such impunity? Until they all bleed and die? Noh Moo Hyun will drag this country into a second IMF crisis I swear. Give me a rifle and a clear line of sight to the Blue House and I'll save this country from armageddon.

That'll leave us with... 74 billion. Not bad... |
