why do people make fun of mid-age single man/woman

People often call them old single man or old single woman. when people are reach mid age between 30-40 of age and still single or virgin , people always make fun of these people. why. are they shortage of something in their life.

a lot of 30-40s are singles. some are divorced, some are inbetween relationships. If they are a virgin, it means they are undesirable. In the bigger scope, its natures way of keeping their unbalanced combination of genes from reproducing because there is obviously something wrong with them.
