Who here's ever heard of Wong Fei Hung, China's greatest hero(well, in my opinion anyways)? He's been portrayed throughtout cinema, by such actors as Kwan Tak Hing(Dreadnuaght), Jet Li(Once Upon A Time In China series), Jackie Chan(Drunken Master and Drunken Master 2), and many more, but does anyone know any of the Shadowless Kick's history? I know some, but not as much as i'd like to.

Wong Fei Hung was born in the town of Fa Shan, Canton, in the late 1800s. His father, Wong Kei Ying(i think that was his name), was a part of a group called the Ten Tigers of Canton, who protected the weak. When he was little he wanted to learn the Hung Gar style of Kung Fu. His father wouldn't teach him, so he sought out his father's master, Luk Ah Choi. When Fei Hung's father found out he was being trained by his former master, he decided to continue the rest of Fei Hung's lessons. Wong Fei Hung grew up as a doctor, and he opened a medical center that also acted as a kung fu school, called Po Chi Lam. He was probably the greatest martial artist of his time, though he did not boast about it. He popularized Hung Gar Kung Fu, and his kicking ability was so fast, that he was nicknamed shadowless kick, because they say he kicked so fast that his legs had no shadows(this is overexaggerating a bit). Like his father, he was a protector of the weak, once defeating an entire gang of 40 or more with just a staff. Wong Fei Hung died until in 1924.

QUOTE (Saint Legends @ Sep 10 2003, 11:30 AM) Who here's ever heard of Wong Fei Hung, China's greatest hero(well, in my opinion anyways)? I know some, but not as much as i'd like to. I've seen movies and series that have portrayed him as a great hero but I don't remember the story. There's also a song about him that I've heard a while ago, I don't know the name of it though. I only remember hearing the words "wong fei hung" in it. QUOTE I always thought he was just a movie character, not based on anyone.. Yep, he's an actual historical figure. QUOTE There's also a song about him that I've heard a while ago, I don't know the name of it though I used to know what the song was called but i forgot. it was actually made for a chinese general, i think, but they made it Wong Fei Hung's trademark theme song. |

If you are talking about the theme song from Once Upon A Time in China, then the name is Nam Yee Dong Ji Keung. George Lam sang that one in Cantonese and Jackie Chan, the other martial artist, sang it in Mandarin version.
But I don't remember he using the words Wong Fei Hung in that song. So perhaps you must be referring to another song from even older days. I thought I read somewhere in Jet Li's Biography that there was not a real thing as no shadow kick. Or perhaps he said the no shadow kick was not like the one in the movies where they have to use wire work at the suggestion of Tsui Hark to make it more exciting. For that, I think the best source is www.jetli.com if you haven't visited them yet. They seem to be very knowledgeable about his moves and kung fu in general. |

Indeed it was. but remember that his adventures in Once Upon A Time In China are fictional.
