Is it REALLY a Dong Son piece though? I always thought the Dong Son lived around the Red River Delta, and the only pieces found out of that region would be from trade with the Dong Son. But the details seem to be suggesting that the Dong Son were in Cambodia as a civilization (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/embarassedlaugh.gif) It could be total BS just like half of EBay.

Nope. Dong Son drums has been found all over South East Asia. They've been found as far south as Indonesia and as far north as southern China. One theory is that the Dong Son people of the Red River delta traded their drums for other goods. |

Another eBay item: Ly Dynasty jar, circa 1009 AD - 1225 AD (I think it's bogus) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...3746064829&rd=1 |

does anybody know who the early viet people were? my guess is that viets were originally malay/austronesian until they got conquered and became heavily sinocized by the han dynasty. the people of the dong son civilization were seafarers.

I agree. I think that the Vietnamese today are the descendants of the Dong Song people, not people migrated south from China as the Chinese wanted us to believe. The ancient Vietnamese were known to have tattoed their body to ward off "sea monsters" during their fishing expeditions. This tradition has lasted until the 1500's (?) I've also noticed the similarity between the Vietnamese people's clothing during the Hung era and before the Chinese occupation to the clothing depicted on bronze drums. |

QUOTE Cambodia - Padtabong Area, an important center of the Dong Son Bronze culture in ancient times That part, it makes it sound like the Dong Son lived there as a civilization. As far as i know they lived in the Red River Delta and traded with neighbors while influencing other people's bronzing. |

I agree. I think that the Vietnamese today are the descendants of the Dong Song people, not people migrated south from China as the Chinese wanted us to believe. perhaps we are a mixture of both? The migration needed for the majority of Viets to have significant amount of Chinese in them has never been recorded. Such a migration surely would've been noticed. Plus it's impossible due to the natural terrain separating North Vietnam and China, only limited migrations would occur throughout history due to the terrain. If you look at the Muong of north Vietnam, historians as well as many archaelogists would consider them the direct descendents of the Dong Son. And they ARE the most related to us. They have light skin, even lighter than most southern Chinese i know, a lot have milky skin. So i don't think we were too related to the other SE Asians to start off with. But i don't believe in the souther Chinese empire migrating south idea, a massive migration at that scale has never been recorded involving Vietnam, and it's impossible for such a migration to go unnoticed. |

Be very careful. It's very easy to buy a fake one for that money. There are so many outfits near Ha Noi to manufacture Dong Son arts & crafts today.

Yeah I was thinking the same. I might as well buy a fake bronze drum when I next go to Vietnam. Damn I forgot to buy it earlier this year (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/icon_sad.gif)
