I was interested in putting some of native folklores/literatures either recited orally or written from different groups. contribute if you like.
Biag ni Lam-Ang (Life of Lam-Ang): Ilocano (notes: some of the names e.g. Don Juan were used... some of these tales were writ during Spanish times) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZrbnftpaNk Bernardo Carpio: Tagalog http://www.wowparadisephilippines.com/bernardo-carpio.html http://www.wowparadisephilippines.com/phil...rdo-carpio.html ... the one above (English) is really a poor translation Mariang Makiling: Tagalog http://folklore.philsites.net/stories/legend1.html Hud Hud/Hudhud ni Aliguyon : Ifugao http://folklore.philsites.net/stories/heroism1.html http://www.pbs.org/kcet/globaltribe/countr...phi_hudhud.html (considered by UNESCO as an endangered masterpiece, there's a clip in there) Hinilawod "Tales from the mouth of the Halawod River": Hiligaynon http://members.aol.com/hiligaynon/hinilawod.htm Ibalon: Bicolano http://members.aol.com/jbbrillo/misc/ibalon.html Tuwa-ang/"Tuwaang Attends a Wedding": Bagobo http://www.jstor.org/pss/1177823 Darangan: Maranao Tale of Sandayo: Subanon This post has been edited by flipcombatmedic: Jul 26 2008, 07:08 PM |

of all the Filipino epics I read, i can say Darangan/Bantugan was the best one, Lam-ang was a good one too
btw, Bernardo Carpio legend came from my town, Montalban... ^_^ although you can read that it is called San Mateo which in fact formerly covered what is now Montalban, now it is only reduced to a small town bordering Marikina yeah, you forgot to put "Indarapatra and Sulayman" |

^yeah i've been to montalban once or twice in 1990s. it's overlooking manila correct? i remember it was pretty hilly and more vegetation there compare to northern metro manila.
yeah well i can't possibly put all in here haha. some of them are also lesser known and some of the stories are now intertwined with popular culture that the original epics are jumbled. as for indapatra, i couldn't find an exact one: i think this one is the same. Legend of Nusa : Lanao http://www.geocities.com/marlonfx/Nusa.html Hari sa Bukid "King of the Fields", Kanlaon (The Ancient King) Epic- Negros Island http://www.geocities.com/marlonfx/hari_sa_bukid.html...they put "S. Luzon" here. once again "original epics being jumbled". there's also the story of olonggapo city (ulo ng apo "head of the chief")...the first time i heard the story it was based on the tale of Aetas...then when I did research a few years ago it said that the story is Sambal rather than Aeta. I'm trying to find the original wordings of some of the tales ie in the oral recital forms because they are more original and more stylistic. so many translation and the stories come of very bland due to simplification. It'd be quiet nice if we can write it down like today's format for Chaucer's Canterbury Tale with the Middle Englishe prose on one page then the modern filipino on the other. I'm trying to find a specific part or story of Kalinga's ullalim, but none availability right now. |

have you ever read about Kumintang? a war song that originated from Batangas...
it is the most interesting of all Filipino epics for me (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif) btw, yeah Montalban is mostly hilly and mountainous but some subdivisions are now already built here (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_sad.gif) |

^i know of the kumintang, have i heard a recital, no.
i'm trying to find links to Mangyan epic poems...i was expecting to find it easier since the Mangyans are one of the more studied groups, they retain their lifestyle, and their writings. but no luck yet. |
