Born in India 1803,he served in the army of the East India Company. In 1835 his father died and left him 30,000 pound with which he bought a ship, the Royalist. He sailed to South East Asia in 1838 as an adventurer.Sarawak Malays and their Iban allies at the time were revolting against tyrannical rule of the Brunei sultan.James Brooke was recruited by the Sultan's governor in Sarawak to help quell the rebellion but instead of fighting the rebels he managed to win their trust and respect when he mediated a peaceful settlement. He was rewarded with a large territory and installed as the Raja of Sarawak, 1841.
(IMG:http://www.ghosteater.com/content/images/jamesbrooke-young.jpg) Much of his time was spent suppressing piracy and headhunting. Getting the recognition from the British Empire was the main reason he managed to hold on to his possessions. The backing from his Malay subjects was also instrumental in his success. Over time he and his successors gradually expanded Sarawak's territory to what it is now. He died in 1868 and was succeeded by his nephew Charles Brooke 1829-1917.Charles was succeeded by his son Charles Vyner Brooke 1874-1963.After the Japanese surrendered he ceded Sarawak to the British Government in 1946.The Brooke dynasty was well liked by Sarawak's citizens but under their rule higher education was neglected. So before his coming, the serawak was teritorial under sultanate/kingdom of Brunei? The revolt make brunei small kingdom/country now. Yet they are still rich.

That's right. Brunei also had nominal control over Sabah before they leased out that territory to Baron Gustav von Overbeck and Alfred Dent.

(IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/embarassedlaugh.gif) bullied? man sabah was never part of the pi officially, it was owned by a single family privately who lived in mindanao which was never really conquered by the spansih who made the archipelago into one nation. even the ameridcans who did put them down, even now you could see that the surrender of the sultans didn't really mean complete submission. i think sabah as long as it's getting paid for rent to the owners, then it is okay. it's like saddam saying that several centuries ago a certain persian emperor owne kuwait therfore that gives him the right to conquer it and pi for your info have fought against haters and bullies for centuries making it the first to be free from rule from former masters direct rule, even one of the first un members. first democracy, i think the pi's experience from such peoples have made it stronger. but going back to the subject and sorry for straying. but this guy was he ever the governor general of the whole indonesia? |

He even makes fun of filipinos in an thread that has nothing to do with filipinos. |

Does James Broke ever become governor general in Indonesia? i never heard that.
Anyhow during first indonesia president Soekarno he tried to incorporate Sabah and Serawak into Indonesian teritory by politic agressive confrontation toward Malaysia. But He was not success. |

QUOTE (Nusantara) Does James Broke ever become governor general in Indonesia? i never heard that. Governor Generals were employees of their own governments who were assigned to govern certain territories under their control. James Brooke was a king.He practically owned Sarawak. That means he did not take orders from any governments. |

I've read of many officials who had local wives or mistresses.
James Brooke claimed he didn't have a queen because his private part was damaged in a battle. |

True story: I met one of the great grandaughters of the last Brooke family while spending the night at a B&B somewhere in York. The family is still doing quite while, now pretty much a upper-middle but still working class, down-to-earth people, having lost that aura of romanticism associated with the White rajah period. The daughter was actually backpacking in Borneo last year. How times have changed.
