So boxing was illegal in China from 1959 until 1986 due to Mao's policies. However, at this year's Olympic Games, China not only won its first gold medal, but they arguably had the best boxing performance out of any country with a total of 2 golds, 1 silver, and 1 bronze (Cuba had more medals, but no golds):
Zhang Xiaoping, gold medal in light heavyweight (IMG:http://olympics.scmp.com/Images/UploadImages/20080824/20080824184535.jpg) Zou Shiming, gold medal in light flyweight (IMG:http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/07en0SE9AJefe/610x.jpg) Zhang Zhilei, silver medal in super heavyweight (IMG:http://img.fannation.com/images/ap/2008/08/18/10/200808181031378737454-p2.jpg) Hanati Silamu (an ethnic Kazakh in China), bronze medal in welterweight (IMG:http://www.newmuslimthailand.com/images/Sport/Olympic/Hanati%20Silamu/hanati%20silamu%206.jpg) Will these great performances attract attention to this relatively new sport in China? I know there are other fighting sports that are much more popular across East Asia, but boxing is very unique in its own way and it would be great to see the sport receive the type of exposure it gets in places like the Philippines. |

i certainly hope so, it would be ideal for China to excel in combat sports, such as judo, boxing, wrestling. as a matter of fact, I think they should institutionalize San shou and shuai jiao as national sports.

One of the Chinese boxers were bad fighters- all they did was run away from the opponant, making quick jabs where he got points, and just kept backing away and backing away from the other opponant whilst the opponant tried to hit him.
fu-king cheap shot. Chinese boxing sucks. |

Chinese men need to step up their judo game, the women are great at it. there is no reason why the Chinese men team can't consistently win golds

You mean something like this? http://www.mmachina.com:81/en/?q=node/1210 Yeah, I agree, China should promote Sanshou and MMA more. Check out some of the links on that website if you want to see some brutal fights in Chinese Sanshou! |

Check out some of the links on that website if you want to see some brutal fights in Chinese Sanshou! oh yeah i've seen that. its pretty awesome there's MMA in china now but they got a lot of work ahead of them, especially ground game. i'm pretty sure Beijing already has some brazilian jiujitsu schools. Sanshou and brazilian jiujitsu would be a devastating combination. Sanshou has strikes and nice Shuai jiao throws and takedowns, with BJJ added in. it would be a very complete system |

You guys really know how to change a thread topic around, lol. Looks like people just hands down prefer other fighting sports over boxing.

^nah, boxing is a great art. i take brazilian jiujitsu mostly but once a week I cross train in boxing/muaythai. boxing is very fun and enjoy it much. as far as hand skills go, boxing is unparelled. just being able to slip a jab and punch someone right in the gut is a satisfying feeling. the good things about boxing, is the footwork, counters/slips and how to maximize the power in your punches. boxing is a good base to have

Unless, of course, they are Laotians like you who act all "gansta". Then maybe they might have a chance, because we all know there is nothing cooler than a Loatian guy who acts black. Oh, wait, nevermind... you're just a stupid troll. Go back to Laotian Chat, dumbass. This post has been edited by JohnnyReb: Nov 3 2008, 03:57 PM |
