hi danielg,
javanese r an ethnic group from central and eastern java, an island of indonesia.
there are around 150 million javanese, making it the largest ethnic group in indonesia. javanese are of malayo-polynesian stock. in multicultural java, there are some indians and a few descendents of africans.
hope this helps

The Javanese population, i.e. the population of Java can be divided into 3 main groups: The Sundanese in West Java, The Javanese in Central and East Java and the Madurese on the Island of Madura bust most of them live on Java just south of Madura around Surabaya. What they call Java people (orang Jawa) in Indonesia are the people who originate from Central and East Java.

There are a few sub groups like the Badui people in West-Java and the Tenggarese in East Java.

Other etnic groups that live in Java are the Chinese and Arabs, the latter especially in the cities along the north coast.

The etnic people from Java can be found all over the Archipelago, since 100's of years there was a influx of people from Java into Lampung (South Sumatra) Under Dutch rule transmigration programs were started, to have cheap laborforces on the plantations in Sumatera. These transmigrationprograms reached their top under rhe rule of Suharto. People from Java were transmigrated all over Indonesia to bring Indonesia under control of Java (Javanisasi)

The Indians of Mas Purnomo play a second role in USA movies the so called Westerns, in which they fight against cowboys and always lose.

Java is named after the word 'barley' in Sanskrit. To the ancient Indian, this island of Java is known as Yawadwipa, the land of barleys...interestingly enough. This is first mentioned in the epic Ramayana in which Sugriwa is looking to find the abducted Sita as far as Yawadwipa.

Indonesia also had a very tight relationship with Thai, didn't they? It was when the Majapahit Kingdom (with Patih Gajahmada) ruled throughout South Asia. And I've read that once upon a time the king of thai is a javanese. Correct me if I made a mistake, pls. I also notice the traditional clothes of village thai female almost similiar to javanese clothes, like "kemben" and so is the type of the alphabeth (like "Hanacaraka, datasawala...etc").

Hindu culture which make segregation caste between society totally is not suitable for Indonesian culture anymore.
India/hindu culture they have people called dalith (untouchable) i never imagine in any society someone can not touch other bcoz they were born different caste. That's why malay in sumatra who had root in budhist which is no caste system as strong as hindu more flexible, speak up and galant compare to javanese who had root in hindu caste mentality.
eventhough these javanese folk most of them already convert to muslim. yet the hindu caste mentality still remain somehow in daily life.
