History of Manila

Manila began as the northern most Muslim sultanate at the mouth of the Pasig River along the shores of Manila Bay. The name came from the term maynilad, literally "there is nilad." Nilad is a white-flowered mangrove plant that grew in abundance in the area.

During the time when Manila was ruled by Rajah Sulaiman, who held ties with the Brunei, Ternate and Sulu sultanates, a Spanish expedition led by Martin de Goiti arrived in Manila and conquered the settlement, eliminating the fledgeling sultanate. One year later, Miguel López de Legaspi went to the town and proclaimed the Philippine Islands for Spain and establishing the city of Manila as its capital. The enclave of Intramuros, at the southern banks of Pasig River was built to protect the Spanish colonizers.

Wow. I was just trying to get a discussion going on the old history of the Malay people. I didn’t realise it was such a controversial topic.

So Fil-Am is Christian, dalawapo is Muslim and I’m Buddhist!

Not one of us is practising our ‘indigenous’ faith. But so what?

Surely religion is a matter for the heart, not the race.

What are you talking about? It makes perfect sense to tell you the truth. Much of Southeast Asian culture is based off of Hindu & Buddhism traditions & beliefs. To covert to Islam or Christianity would be killing off the culture. I could understand if these belief systems werent rooted into SE Asian culture then coverting them to Islam & Christianity would be easy and wouldnt cause any disturbance but its a different story.

To convert a country like...um..lets say Laos..to Christianity or Islam would be destroying it. You can say the same for many other SE Asian countries. Its just that simple.

Hinduism and Buddihism was rooted in India not SEAsia. If mainland SEAsia wants to convert to hinduism and buddihsm then be my guest.

Hi I.M.,
I thought they must have been, due to the Javanese Buddhist/Hindu history, but I've never seen it written anywhere.

I suppose there may still be ruins of temples somewhere, like in Java.

Many thanks

The oldest Malaysian stone inscriptions from 400CE were found in Bujang Valley. These include Sanskrit Buddhist texts, names of rulers and kingdoms, engravings of stupas and prayers for a ship captain named Buddha Gupta.

QUOTE (dalawapo @ Sep 22 2004, 05:09 PM)
filipino malay were first austronesian animist ----> hindu/islam ----> christianity

The muslims in Manila never converted to Christianity. They withdrew to Brunei after they ceded Manila to the Spaniards. I think Sultan Sulaiman and his men were Brunei Malays and they had been running a trading and raiding colony in Manila.I'm sure some animist Luzon natives were also living in that colony and these Luzon natives were the ones who became christians during the Spanish occupation .

QUOTE
The Kastila claimed they had come in "peace and friendship." The leaders identified themselves as Martin de Goiti and Juan de Salcedo. At first Rajah Soliman, the Muslim lord of Manila, was friendly and bade the Kastila welcome. But for reasons not clear to this day, an exchange of gunfire took place between the natives and the Kastila. Against the better-armed and -trained foreigners, the natives were soon driven from the fort, leaving their kingdom in flames.

Soliman and his warriors hid in the forests upriver until word got to them that the Kastila left after two days. Soliman returned to rebuild his fort. But the mud had hardly dried on the walls, the palm tree logs barely firm on the ground, and the bronze lantakas hardly poised toward the bay when once again Maynila was assaulted anew by Castilian power. This time they had not just once ship (as when Goiti came) but three ships escorted by 24 paraos, or outriggers. The force consisted of 280 soldiers and 600 Visayan allies who were carrying an age-old grudge against the Muslims who had plundered their villages, killed many of their people or put them in chains to sell as slaves.

Lakan Dula, the chief of Tunduk, realizing how futile it would be to resist the powerful enemy, opted for peace. He also persuaded his nephew, Soliman, and the old king, Rajah Matanda, to submit peacefully to the Kastila. After four days of negotiation, all three chiefs agreed to receive the Kastila.

Assured of a peaceful reception, the leader of the expedition came ashore and was introduced to the chiefs as Miguel Lopez de Legaspi. Legaspi then took possession of Maynila and performed the symbolic ceremony of lopping off tree branches as a sign of ownership. The date was May 18, 1571. Henceforth, from this day forward, Maynila had entered into the calendar of the West
