Several decade ago the sumatran were prominent among the intellectual figures in the independence movement of Indonesia.
Also a lot of sumatran are well known for the famous writer among Indonesian, one of them Mochtar Lubis from Mandailing people of north Sumatra who just recently passed away. the award is for the good asian in literature. I think it's just like asian type noble prize in literature i guess.
