Trace your family lineage where they once came from! Has anybody been to http://www.yutopian.com/names/ ? I thought it was a pretty organized and interesting, and some of it could even be right. After all, most of the places where Chinese people came out of was central and west China eh? And then, yada yada, they moved down east and south and mixed with the local peoples and stuff.

My Surname: Zhang (also known as Zhang, Chang, Cheung, Jung, Cheong, Jong, Teo, Teoh)

The 3rd most common last name in China. Shao Hao has a son called Hui who invented bows and arrows. These were the most important weapons in ancient China. Hui was thus given the title of Gong Zheng, which means the supervisor of the manufacture of bows. Later, the last name of Zhang was used (the ancient word Zhang looks like a person holding a bow). During Chun Qiu, an official Jia Hou of Jin kingdom changed his name to Zhang. At the end of Qin Dynasty, Ji Liang of Han failed to assassinate Qin Shi Huang Di and changed his name to Zhang as a refuge. Both descentents of Jia Hou and Ji Liang bear the last name of Zhang.

Hometown: East of Qing He in HeBei Province.
---------------------------------------------------------------
My mothers surname: He

The 17th most common last name in China. The name Ho came from the last name Han. During the first year of the Xi Zhou, Wu Wang’s second son Tang Shu Yu was awarded the land of Tang (Yi Cheng of Shanxi). Later, descendents were awarded the Jin kingdom (Tai Yuan in Shanxi). A few generations later, the Han kingdom was awarded to a descendent called Wan, and he became the forefather of the Han family. During Zhan Guo (475 – 221 B.C.), the Han kingdom was eliminated by the Qin kingdom and the Han people fled. There was a person called Han Han who tried to flee to the other side of a river. The Qin army stopped him and asked for his name. Trembling, Han pointed at the freezing river, implying that his last name was "Han" (the last name "Han" rhymes with the word "cold"). The guard misunderstood him and recorded his name as "He", which means the "river". Han later changed the name from "He" of the river to the last name "He" (the former character has water as part of the character and the latter has man as part of the character).

Hometown: West of Lu Jiang in AnHui province.

lai - 賴
The 98th most common last name in China. The brother of Zhou Wu Wang, Shu Ying, was awarded the duke of Lai (north east of Shi in Henan). In 538 B.C., the Lai kingdom was destroyed by Chu Ling Wang. Some of its people fled to the neighboring kingdoms of Luo and Fu and changed their name to Luo and Fu. Others migrated north and settled in Da Yan (Yanling in Henan). They adopted the last name of Lai to commemorate their old kingdom. Because of this, the Lais, the Fus and the Luos are closely related.

ok.. cool... so now that you've brought me here, tell me waht this says...

(IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/embarassedlaugh.gif) all i can get out of it is that we used to have a kingdom or country of some sort... haha...

Interesting... It even had a guy called Ben...

The 2nd most common last name in China. The origin of the Li last name was quite complicated, having to do with the official title and tree name. There was a descendent of Shao Hao known as Ben Tao, who was an official of the Justice Department. Ben Tao was given the title of Da Li (Li which has the same pronouncement as the last name Li, means reasoning, and justice). According to the legend, Ben Tao has an unicorn which could distinguish criminals from innocent people. When brought in front of a lineup, the unicorn would point to the guilty party with its horn. Ben’s descendents held the office of justice for generations from Xia to Shang Dynasty, and was known as the Li’s (justice). At the end of Shang Dynasty, Li Zheng was executed by Zhou Wang for making a bad judgment. His wife and son Li Zhen escaped to ruins of Yi Hou. They found a lot of pear trees which helped them to escape starvation. To commemorate this, they change their last name from the Li of justice to the Li of pear. During the Tang Dynasty, many people (including Xu, Bing, Dong, An, Ge, Du, Wu, Ma, Zhang, and Hong) were give the name of Li for their contributions in establishing the Tang Dynasty, and Li became a big family.

The 8th most common last name in China. The Huangs and Zhaos have the same forefather, Shao Hao (2,597-2513 B.C.). Shao Hao’s mother was Huang E. Huang loved to travel by boat in the daytime and knit at night. One day, Huang met a handsome man called son of Bei Di, in Shangdong. They fell in love and got married. After one year, they gave birth to Shao Hao. After a few generations, Ben Tao became the head of the justice department. Ben’s son Bo Yi married Yu Shun’s youngest daughter and gave birth to Da Lian. Xia Yu awarded the Huang kingdom to Da Lian, and his descendents are known as the Huangs. The Huangs were discriminated upon, during the Xia Dynasty and were called the Huang Yi (barbarians). The situation was improved in the Zhou Dynasty when Yi Yin of the Huang Kingdom became the prime minister of Shang Tang. The Huang Kingdom was recognized by the Zhou Dynasty, but was eliminated in 648 B.C., by Chu, and the descendents began to bear the last name of Huang. (Huang means yellow in Chinese).
