Hello all,
I am half Asian (Thai/American), finishing my undergrad in NY (which is a pretty liberal state) and am deciding if I want to Lubbock, Texas (Texas Tech University) for graduate school because I got accepted. I was just wondering how I would be treated down there. I guess us Northerners have a biased view towards the conservative south as being hicks, rednecks, etc. but I was just wondering how I would fair down there if I were to move down to Lubbock and finish up graduate school. Will I be able to fit in?

Lubbock is a pretty small, insignificant place as far as Texas towns are concerned. I've personlly never been there, but I had a friend that went to TT and he was saying it was all white kids and lots of hicks...but that's definitely not what it's like throughout Texas. You should move to the DFW area, UT Arlington has very decent programs for everything. Austin and College Station are way too college-y and big for me and they always have a cult following. University of Houston is a decent school and San Antonio or Corpus Christi would be the next best bet. unless the college is one of the best, town that it's in is really important to me.
