Did you know you've wanted to do it since you were a child? Or did you know too late or became a super senior? What helped you choose your major? |

Figured it out in May of grade 11. Because of the program I chose, had I decided any later, I likely would have had to victory lap it. It gave me 9 months to make a portfolio and it was still down to the wire. Hahah. Indeed, most people in my year are NOT my age. Either victory lapped it or did a year (or two) somewhere else.
Grade 12 was HECTIC. Abandoned most of my extra-curricular activities and said fu-k you to a lot of friends whose drama I didn't have time for anymore. I ended up choosing to major in Industrial Design and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. I was introduced to it at a University Fair that they hold downtown every year. Initially when I was in high school I was really trying to go into Foreign Language (Japanese) but decided I needed something else. I chose my major according to what I love to do. Since I am very passionate about cooking, and have interest in science, I found a disciplinary subject that married to two - Culinology (Culinary Technology) and now I'm going to go for my B.S. in Food Science Culinology Option. The benefits of this career definitely outweighs that of being a Chef working in laborious conditions both in pay and physical demand. The bottom line with choosing a major is to find something that you want to do and if its going to make you happy doing it - You also have to be realistic about it.

For me, it was right under my nose. In college I was always looking up articles and spending hours reading about modern China's political environment and economy...and ignoring everything else about it.
When it came down to choosing my major, I took a few Poli Sci classes and fell in love with Comparative Politics, and jumped into my Poli Sci major soon after and I got to study what I was already reading about anyways. |

well before college I had figured out that humanities was my strong suit; I never did well in mathematics (always 'barely passed' honors one or two years), and same thing with chem and bio. on the other hand I loved reading about history and government.
it was a tossup my sophomore year but I decided that I loved government / political institutions and processes more than I did history and selected poli sci as my major. sure I have regrets but I've never really doubted that I love reading and learning about government. |

When I first started college, I always thought that I wanted to do something related to the medical field, so I decided to major in biology. However, I took some of the core requirement classes and realized I enjoyed the quantitative analysis classes. I was heading towards majoring in economics, and one of the required classes for that major is statistics. I took the introductory class and found it very interesting. I liked how it was so practical/useful & had applications in various fields, so I decided to be a statistics major shortly thereafter.
It's worked out well for me so far. |

I just did it to cover up my relationship with my BF from my mom. Then, I fell in love with nursing. Sometimes, it's random. Mine was a random choice, an easy way out of mommy's hatred for my last BF...lol And I stuck to it. Just try!

When you're taking general classes your freshman year, figure out what area you like and/or are good at and go from there.
