I wish I couls see her live in concert. This articles is an bit out of date, she's 16 now.
A girl with a golden voice and a rags-to-riches story makes for a great superstar-making formula. Sarah Geronimo, tinseltown's newest Cinderella, talks about the first pains of stardom while always looking at the bright side of life. Less than a year after winning the talent search that launched her as a major star, Sarah Geronimo-15 years old, with two hits songs under her name (the cover of Celine Dion's "To Love You More" and her own "Forever's Not Enough")-has not only learned to smile at everyone, wave to fans, and spot a fellow star and make beso, she's also learned that it takes more than a rigidly trained singing talent to survive in this business-it takes stamina. Her father, Delfin, who honed her to become the stunningly gifted performer that she is today, didn't quite brief her on that. During the holiday season, there were corporate shows left and right, promos for both her now-double platinum Popstar album and the two Viva filmfest entries she was in: Captain Barbell and Filipinas, and rehearsals for her first big concert at the Ynares Gym in Antipolo. The load proved to be a bit much for the 15-year-old and her slight frame. Hence, early Christmas morning, three days before her big concert at the Ynares Gym in Antipolo, she was rushed to St. Luke's Medical Center because of fever and fatigue. The show had to be postponed. Days prior to that, she lost her voice in the middle of a performance at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel. BETTER THAN NOTHING The girl, however, prefers to look at the bright side of life. Asked what she doesn't like being an artista, she says, "'Yung masyado pong maraming trabaho. Kasi namimiss kop o 'yung pamilya ko," she tells us in between endless sips form her water bottle and doing her own makeup in one of the dressing room at the GMA-7 studios. "Naintindihan ko naman po kasi ganoon po talaga. Mas mabuti nga po 'yung marami kesa 'yung wala po, 'di ba? It's easy to see why some of the country's top celebrities have been generous in publicly praising Sarah. Kris loves her, and so does Sharon, her co-Viva artist, and Maricel, whom she met on the set of Filipinas. Sarah is genuinely shy despite her hitmaker stature. Just like another singing contest-discovery that made it into superstardom, she likes to pepper her sentences with "po" and "opo." And she likes to smile a lot, even when the subject is her workload and the fatigue that comes with it. She seems to have accepted them as a fact of her new life as a star, a small price to pay for the blessings that have come her way after winning the plum prize ins Star For A Night last March. Her P1-million cash prize from the talent search paid for all for her family's previous debts, and the 10-year management contract under Viva Entertainment that came with it has assured her that she, her parents and three siblings won't be going back to their less-than-privileged lifestyle anytime soon. SAD STORIES Sarah Asher Geronimo grew up in Sta. Cruz, Manila, in a rented house which she describes as "simple lang, maayos naman po kaya lang luma na." Together with her parents, Divine and Delfin, sisters Johna Rizzi (now 18), Sunshine Grace (now 16), and only brother Ezekiel Gabriel (now 7), they would go to church on Sundays in the Espiritu Santo Parochial Church, or at the church in University of Santo Tomas where her mom used to work in the cashier's office and where Sarah spent her high school years (before stopping last semester). Pasyal meant going to Tutuban or Harrizon Plaza. Eating our meant Jollibee. But even with her father's income as a PLDT employee, the earnings form their small RTW business and the improvised beauty parlor that Divine ran inside their home, the Geronimos could barely make both ends meet. "Nung walang-walang pera sina Mama, then magpapasukan na po sa school, di po kami makapasok kasi wala po kaming mga gamit. Wala po kaming pambili ng books and school supplies," Sarah told StarStudio last December. "Ang ginawa ng daddy ko, nangutang siya. Siyempre dahil may binabayaran na naman kaming utang, 'yung kakainin naman namin ang problema. Ayun po, tuyo na lang ang inuulam naming. Tapos po, 'yung kanin iginigisa na lang naming sa margarine. Masarap naman po." Still, Mommy Divine, who is Sarah's constant companion these days, remembers the child Sarah as "bibo, masayahin, malikot, akala mo laging supervisor." Even as a tyke, Sarah was already showing the makings of a performer. "Sayaw nang sayaw, mahilig kumanta. At umarte, Michael Jackson was Sarah's idol. She loved to sing "Heal the World" and would strut like The Gloved One. Which would prompt a neighbor to comment: "Ano ba 'yang anak mo, parang walang buto kung sumayaw." BORN PERFORMER To say that Sarah loved to perform is to make an understatement. She actively participated in school programs and joined a lot of singing contests. She auditioned for every television station and she would usually be taken in. At three, she was already in the kiddie show Pen-pen de Sarapen. She was also cast in For Kids Only, Atbp. And Hiraya Manawari. She was part of the first batch of stars in Ang TV. But it was Sarah's talent for singing that her father chose to focus on and improve by enrolling her at the Center For Pop Music at six years old. Delfin would've wanted his daughter to attend music school regularly, but there were times when they couldn't even afford the fare to Quezon City, where the center is located. So he made up for it by training Sarah at home for two hours everyday. (He was not a strict teacher, according to Sarah. Before the grand finals for Star for A Night, she refused to show her performance to her father. "Nagalit siya bakit ayaw ko ipakita. Kinakabahan daw siya. Du'n lang naman siya nagalit.") We asked Sarah if she doesn't tire of getting asked questions about her underprivileged past. "Hindi naman po. Minsan lang po parang nawawalan lang kami ng privacy. Pero okey lang naman po. Walang namang masama sa buhay namin." But life has, of course, become better for the Geronimos after Sarah's triumph in Star For A Night. These days, Sarah lives around in a new Toyota Grandia, the downpayment for which was supposedly loaned from Viva. The family now rents a slightly bigger house in Tandang Sora. "Binabaan po 'yung rent nung kilala ng tita ko. Para po siguro makatulong (sa amin)." Her father will soon avail of the early-retirement plan in PLDT, where he's been working for the past 22 years now. They plan to revive their humble boutique and beauty parlor, but this time somewhere in P. Margallo Street near UST. Divine says they're going to name it after Sarah. There is always, indeed, a bright side for Sarah Geronimo. No matter the workload, she says she enjoys it so much when kids join her onstage when she performs. "Nakakatuwa," she says. "Biruin mo mga fans ko mga bata." She misses regular school and her friends, "pero inaayos na naman po, eh, 'yung home study program." Now if only her payslip could buy her more time to spend with her family the last time they spent a whole day together? "Swimming lang po. Sa Laguna. Private swimming pool po. Rest day po kasi 'yun kaya lumabas po kami." - - This post has been edited by Fil-Am: Oct 11 2004, 08:55 AM |

QUOTE (kim_kayie @ Oct 11 2004, 10:49 AM) (IMG:http://www.sarahgeronimo.com/gallery/albums/userpics/dchamps-10.jpg) trivia: i just noticed that she loves wearing gowns with shawl. (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I noticed that most of the pics. I see of her has her wearing an dress. If anybody else wants to join her forum here is an link. Sarah Geronimo How the West was won FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo The Philippine Star 09/29/2004 NEW YORK – They came, they were seen, they conquered. Cliché? I know (sigh!). Their concert was a smash-hit! Try again. What about this: If you can make it there (New York), you’ll make it anywhere? Cliché, but true! That’s exactly what the quartet of Sarah Geronimo, Mark Bautista and Rachelle Ann Go (all Star for a Night champions), together with Christian Bautista (of Star in a Million fame) did last Sept. 18 when the Night of the Champions concert was mounted at the full-packed Golden Center for the Performing Arts at Queens College, Queens, this city. It was the first leg of the champions’ US concert tour, produced by Alice and Red Martinez of Re-Al Entertainment, Inc., with the same successful stagings last Sept. 24 in San Francisco (together with Star in a Million champion Erik Santos, as ABS-CBN/The Filipino Channel’s way of saying thank you to its patrons, held free at an open-air venue that drew an estimated 10,000 people) and Sept. 26 in Chicago, and the finale set for this Saturday, Oct. 2, in Los Angeles (the Muñoz brothers Leandro and Carlo are the front act) with Al Chu making his "debut" as concert producer. The champions made it in New York – and how! – and Funfare should congratulate the Martinez couple for ushering in a new batch of Filipino entertainers into the US scene. "At first," said Alice, "some people were discouraging me. But when I saw a videotape of their concert (held twice at the Araneta Coliseum), I knew they would also be a big hit in the US. I had that gut feeling. I wasn’t wrong." Losing no time, Alice and Red contacted their good friend Aster Amoyo who in turn contacted the Viva people (big boss Vic del Rosario Jr. and children Veronique and Vincent, and Viva Concerts, Inc. head June Torrejon) and, without much ado, closed the deal. On with the show! It was the champions’ first ever trip to America and how excited they were! Ma’am June T. acted as the Mother Hen. Sarah was accompanied by her parents, Rachelle by her mother, Christian by his manager Carlo Orosa (who kept an eagle eye on his talent) and Mark by his lonesome (his production assistant’s application for a visa was denied). On their first night at The Big Apple, Mark got "lost"; it turned out that, he said, he strolled to the St. Patrick’s Cathedral (a stone’s throw from the Radisson Lexington Hotel in Manhattan where they were billeted). Two days later, in a rush for the flight to Chicago, poor Mark lost his suitcase at the La Guardia Airport. Baby Navarete, producer of the Champions show in the Windy City, came to Mark’s rescue and bought him a new set of clothes. Hay, salamat po! was all Mark could say. I knew that the concert at the Queens College would be a hit (not only because Alice and Red said that tickets were sold out) when, the night before, Filipino fans trooped to the Subic Restaurant in New Jersey for the "Meet & Greet" which was such a hit that dozens of fans had to be politely turned away (sorry, no reservations). Wondering why Sarah and company are so popular in America? Simple: Thanks to The Filipino Channel which covers not only both coasts of America but parts of Europe, Australia, the Middle East and Asia. "Thousands of Filipinos here are TFC subscribers," said Alice. "That’s why they are up-to-date on what’s happening in the Philippines. They are familiar with the soaps and other shows, and stars appearing on TFC are household names here." No wonder. At the Queens College gym (capacity: More than 2,000), the champions promised right with their very first song: We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions. And for more than two hours, they did rock ‘em – and how the audience reacted with delight! As I’ve been saying, fans are fans anywhere they are, whether in New York or in Nueva Ecija. They shriek, they scramble over one another to get their idols’ autograph and for a chance to have their pictures taken with them, they surge towards the stage as their idols sing and sway (but then, this is America and the burly security guys will let the fans go only that far) and they wait for their idols at the backstage exit for a last lingering look at them. After the opening number, Christian took the spotlight solo with a heartfelt rendition of his hit song The Way You Look At Me, followed by Hands to Heaven and a Broadway Medley. Applause! Then, he did a duet of You and Me (We Wanted It All) with Rachelle who then had her own moment, doing a Sharon Cuneta Medley, seguing to Mariah Carey’s Through The Rain (Rachelle’s winning piece at the Star for a Night grand finals) and Don’t Cry Out Loud. Applause, applause!! Sarah and Mark made their entrance with a duet of Ako’y Maghihintay and, together with Christian and Rachelle, did a Novelty Medley (you know, those popular "naughty" songs with the corresponding "naughty" body language), totally winning the audience with their cute version of Otso-Otso, prompting several fans to jump out of their seats and, yes, "otso-otso-ed" with the champions. Applause, applause, applause!!! That was only half of the show (the rest, I’m sure, you’ve seen at The Big Dome), made more exciting by a US-bred back-up band (with Pitchy Sarabia, a niece of Vivian Sarabia, as percussionist; she did a good job even if she was on crutches because of a bad leg). Halfway through, Sarah and Mark called Alice and Red to the stage and sang to them Ikaw, the theme song of the Martinez couple who are celebrating their wedding anniversary second week of October. Alice tickled the audience when she gave the shy (and blushing) Red a hug and a . "First time it ever happened to us," said Alice. Being called onstage, that is. Considering that she and Red have been at it (producing shows in America) for more than 14 years! Re-Al (derived from the couple’s first names) took over in 1999 from Jose Ojeda Jr. (of JVR Productions – J for Jose, V for Val and R for Raul) which started mounting shows in 1987 (among them those of Kuh Ledesma, The APO, Pilita Corrales and Basil Valdez at the Carnegie Hall). Since their first project, a Gary Valenciano concert, in 1990, Alice and Red have produced more than a dozen, including those of Regine Velasquez (1991); Jose Mari Chan (1992); Pops Fernandez and Martin Nievera (1993); Jose Mari, Janet Basco and Joey Albert (1994); Regine Velasquez and Ariel Rivera (1995); Regine Velasquez, Ariel Rivera and Janno Gibbs (1996); Martin Nievera and Jocelyn Enriquez (1997); Joey Albert, Janet Basco and Leah Navarro (1998); Pops Fernandez (1999); Jolina Magdangal, Roselle Nava and Angelika dela Cruz (2000); Regine Velasquez and Ogie Alcasid (2002); Sergio Mendez (2003); and Night of The Champions (2004). The show, as I was saying, was a smash-hit – and to think that Sarah and Mark and Rachelle and Christian were shaking off jet lag! They probably didn’t know it but they have just paved the way (to America) for the new breed of Filipino entertainers, a feat that should cause the "veterans" sleepless nights. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was how the West was won by the Pinoy champions. Sarah Geronimo: shining Brighter and Brighter!
By WALDEN SADIRI (IMG:http://www.sarahgeronimo.com/forum/uploads/post-16-1099565921.jpg) With the news of her afternoon soap opera “Sarah, The Teen Princess” coming to an end, rumors soon surfaced that Sarah Geronimo’s popularity was dimming and THAT was the reason they are ending the show. But the truth is far from the rumors circulating as explained by Sarah’s talent manager and close friend of Vic del Rosario (direct manager of Sarah Geronimo) June Rufino. According to her, Sarah Geronimo’s drama show was slated in an afternoon spot as an experiment and it performed beyond their expectations since it was the most popular in that timeslot. Also as promised, the show had two seasons. Now, offers have been coming in for Sarah for a new show. But this time around it won’t be for an afternoon timeslot because the “Pop Star” might soon be the newest “Primetime Star” once Mr. Del Rosario decides on the right project for her which is said to be for primetime. The popularity issue is immaterial to Sarah as she explained during a casual lunch with the press last Wednesday to share her “Night of the Champions” US concert tour experience. “There is pressure when people compare you to other singers,” explained Sarah about new singers and now her contemporaries like Rachel Ann Go. “But it was never my mentality to worry if they surpass my career or not. What I want to happen is for them to make it too like what happened to me.” A good gauge of Sarah Geronimo’s popularity was the “Night of the Champions” shows in New York, Chicago and San Francisco wherein Filipinos in said States recognized her as well as her colleagues Mark Bautista and Rachel Ann Go wherever they went. She personally felt like a very big star as her “kababayans” flock to the restaurants they go to and places they promoted their concert. In the concert, she even had several standing ovations. They were amazed for her rendition of “To Love You More,” her Celine Dion medley and Regine Velasquez medley. A first timer in America, she was overwhelmed by the warmth and hospitality of her “kababayans.” More importantly, she worked her charming innocence to the delight of her audience. In one instance, when the crowd yelled that she could just stay with them and never come back to the Philippines, she wittingly smiled and replied how could she do that when she declared with immigration that she was coming back to the Philippines. Her remark made everyone laugh. Also, the venues they performed in were always packed and she was more than satisfied knowing she made them happy. Sarah is thankful to ABS-CBN for giving her show “Sarah, The Teen Princess” because it introduced her to the Filipinos living in US. She stressed that that contributed to her successful concert there. She also acknowledged VIVA’s big boss, Vic del Rosario, for her success saying that without him, she would not have reached her goals as an artist. The singer’s efforts in showbiz didn’t go unnoticed too as she was bestowed honors by different award-giving bodies in the country. She was the recipient of the Most Promising Female Artist in “Aliw Awards” and was the Best New Female Recording Artist for “Forever’s Not Enough” and the Best Dance Song for “Sa Iyo” from the 17th Awit Awards. Next for Sarah Geronimo is her upcoming album under VIVA Records which is in its finishing touches already. The album called “Princessa ng Buhay Ko” also has an Ogie Alcasid song composed especially for Sarah. The music video of her second album’s carrier single entitled “How Could You Say You Love Me” was shot in the US by director Timmy Jimenez. Her debut album already reached quadruple platinum status. Also in the works for her is “Lastikman” wherein she plays the love interest of Mark Bautista who happens to be Lastikman. She joins other seasoned actors in “Lastikman” like Cherie Gil, John Estrada, Danilo Barrios, Elizabeth Oropesa, Tuesday Vargas and cameo appearances by Senator Bong Revilla as Captain Barbel, Anne Curtis as Dyesebel and Joel Torre as Lastikman’s father. (Sarah’s popularity too has won her endorsing jobs for fast food chain Jollibee and Charmee.) Her schedule of shows for next year is also starting to fill up as early as now. She will return to the US again for a repeat peformance in “Return of the Champions” in May; she will also be part of the Lunar Parade on Feb. 12 in Los Angeles, On Jan. 22 and 29, she will be in Guam and Hawaii respectively for another tour of “Night of the Champions.” But this Nov. 19, she will have another concert with fellow champion singers in “Pinoy Idol.” In such a short span of time, Sarah has proven to everyone that she is not all about hype but of talent. Her manager Boss Vic del Rosario describes her as having a certain kind of magic that captivates her audience. Only 16 years old, she definitely have more things to offer as her musicality matures in the business. Some who have seen her perform can’t even help but compare her to “American Idol’s” Jasmine Trias who visited the country recently. When asked about how she feels when people say that she is better than Jasmine Trias, she simply replied, “Ewan ko po. I saw her in ‘American Idol” and napahanga niya ako kasi lahat po ng songs na ibinibigay sa kanya pumapasa siya.” On the lighter side, her recent trip to the US proved to be a memorable experience for the young lass. As a bonus, Boss Vic treated her and her family to a Celine Dion concert while in America. She admitted that she was really mesmerized by her idol. “Napanganga na lang ako,” she described. She also finally saw Disneyland and the first character she looked for was Mickey Mouse. She enjoyed four rides which included Indiana Jones. According to her, they weren’t allowed to board scream-rides since they might lose their voices in the process and they still had shows scheduled. She was also flattered with the gifts she received from her Filipino fans. She and her colleagues received “balikbayan boxes” filled with assorted goodies. With all her successes so far, does she still have a Christmas wish? “Well, I hope my family will be complete this Christmas and I hope I won’t be working on that day,” she smiled. “But I don’t mind if we spend Christmas in the States para makakita ako ng snow!” This post has been edited by Fil-Am: Nov 5 2004, 03:49 PM |

Yummy Sarah, yummy Mark!
Yummy Sarah, yummy Mark! The Philippine Star 11/04/2004 They came, they saw, they conquered. Sarah Geronimo and Mark Bautista, two of the hottest young talents, are back from a successful concert tour in the US. The top fast-food chain in the country, Jollibee, recently welcomed back Sarah and Mark during the 10th anniversary celebration of the popular Sunday variety show ASAP. The two are the current endorsers of the Pinoy favorite Jollibee Yumburger. Jollibee is proud of the success these young talents have achieved in their career. "We regard such homegrown talents who deserve to be recognized not only because of the prestige and pride that they bring to our country but also because of their determination and commitment to their craft," Jollibee marketing manager Lot Legaspi says. "Jollibee has always believed in the skills and capabilities of the Filipino youth." Fresh from their first US trip, the delightful pair happily recounted their taste of American culture. According to them, everything in the US is big, fast and fancy. "Performing in the US was really an experience. It was something I have always dreamed of," Sarah gushes. As Filipinos in the US are eager for the familiar taste of "home" like the langhap-sarap food of Jollibee and the comforting feeling of close-knit family ties, they excitedly came to see the young talents perform. From coast to coast, kababayans and Filipino-Americans enthusiastically welcomed Sarah, Mark and the other talented performers of the Night of the Champions Concert which featured winners of various talent search contests on TV. From New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, to Los Angeles, the young artists performed to SRO crowds who honored them with standing ovations. "Sobra kaming touched sa kanilang suporta. Hindi namin akalain na ganon ang pagtanggap nila sa amin," says Sarah. Mark adds, "Sabik sila sa Pinoy performers at game silang tumayo at sumayaw. Masarap talaga yung feeling when you know your audience is having a good time." But it was not all work as the talented singers also had a chance for a bit of R&R. Like other young people, Sarah and Mark went on a shopping spree, buying lots of clothes, perfumes, and chocolates for pasalubong. Mark’s favorite place to visit was LA where he saw Mickey Mouse and company at Disneyland. He also toured Universal Studios in Hollywood. Sarah, on the other hand, loved Las Vegas as she got to watch Celine Dion, one of her favorite international singers, perform live at the Caesar’s Palace. "Talagang super galing niya and I’m so glad that I was able to see and hear her sing," she recalls. But no matter how much they enjoyed touring, they also had their share of homesickness. Sarah missed being with her siblings, while Mark missed Filipino food. "We both missed eating rice and eating Jollibee Yumburgers. Iba kasi yung fast food doon eh," Sarah recounts. Now back in Manila, Sarah and Mark are busy with their film and TV commitments. Both are also preparing for their upcoming concert, Pinoy Idols, next month at the Araneta Coliseum. This will reunite them with their Champions co-stars, plus other special guests. http://www.philstar.com/philstar/NEWS200411041703.htm {date} by lamei Sarah's New Album: Sweet Sixteen Sa wakas, may bagong album na rin si Sarah Geronimo from: www.journal.com.ph PAGKTAPOS ng kanyang quintiple platinum na debut album na Popstar: A Dream Come True, ilulunsand ng Viva Records ang latest album ng super teen idol na si Sarah Geronimo ngayong Linggo (Nov. 7) sa ASAP Mania ng ABS-CBN. Ang album na pinamagatang Sweet Sixteen ay pinangunguna-han ng carrier single na How Could You Say You Love Me na composed ni Vehnee Saturno na siya ring lumikha sa mega hit song ni Sarah na Forever's Not Enough. Kabilang din sa labum ang mga awiting Sana, Hanggang Kai-lan, And You Smiled At Me, Love Can't Lie, Love Of My Life, I Wanna Know What Love Is, Before I Let You Go, Champion, Prinsesa ng Puso Mo, Minsan, Lumingon Ka Lang, You're Ta-king My Breath A-way, You Don't Know Me, Light Of A Million Morning at ang dalawang bonus gtracks na Tu-nay Talaga (Char-mee Song) at Manila Bulletin Jing-le.
