Ya, it is good to see that the Indonesian perspective is getting on the big screen, with films like Mengejar Ombak and Mata Ombak.
Too bad I can't attend this surf film festival, but if anybody else is going to this event, please write about it in our forum. (I can't complain, because I finished the job in Brisbane, and have three days to cruise the coast with my bodyboard.) |

Ralf you do wind surf? Not a lot of folks wind surf anymore, but i'd like to do a cross bay race one day.
right now i'm just swimming, maybe when i come home this winter, when the swells are in the west side i'll just paddle. last time i was home i boarded but i scraped my back on some coral. i'll just paddle for some shoulder workout. |

windsurf's out, kitesurf's in i don't follow trends. plus kite surfing is dangerous, there's a guy in Oahu during a tournament that got blown several hundred feet up in the air and crashed on the beach. Plus it's so unpredictable. Whatever is fun is fun, you don't have to copy people to have fun. Just because Hamilton shows it everybody copy. Windsurfing still bad @$$ to me. When kiteboarders can cross channels, like Kohala to Hana, then maybe they'll be on the same level. |

Ralf you do wind surf? Not a lot of folks wind surf anymore, but i'd like to do a cross bay race one day. No.I tried it once on a business colleague's sailboard, and I always got blown over by the wind. I could not keep that damn sail up. I have seen wind surfers do amazing things on big waves, but a wipe out is sure to damage your sailboard. Check out this winsurfer going for it on one of Hawaii's outer reefs : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvufq6rzHTQ...feature=related Not quite Indo, but here is Noosa and Maroubra. After my last work related trip up to tropical Queensland, I had some days off to chase waves. Unfortunately there was no swell and the prevailing winds tended to be onshore all along the east coast. Maroubra in the middle of Sydney gave me the best waves. (IMG:http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b170/Ralf_Dudat/Surfing/MaroubraBeach1Sydney.jpg) Noosa was an exciting place, with warm tropical waters and a great holiday atmosphere, but the surf was feeble. That's me with yellow MadDog fins and my old red Manta Alien bodyboard. (IMG:http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b170/Ralf_Dudat/Surfing/Noosa8Queensland.jpg) (IMG:http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b170/Ralf_Dudat/Surfing/Noosa4Queensland.jpg) (IMG:http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b170/Ralf_Dudat/Surfing/Noosa1Queensland.jpg) (IMG:http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b170/Ralf_Dudat/Surfing/Noosa2Queensland.jpg) (IMG:http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b170/Ralf_Dudat/Surfing/Noosa6Queensland.jpg) (IMG:http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b170/Ralf_Dudat/Surfing/Noosa5Queensland.jpg) The water was so warm I did not even feel it splashing on my face. I wore a 1.5mm wetsuit and sunhat to keep my white Euro skin from burning and surfed till sunset. The surfing pictures is taken by Mussa at Noosa. Brisbane is a Sun City, during a day is very hot up to 30 degree but after 5 pm the weather changes to 18 – 20 degree.

Ha ha..... Mussa I should hire you as my surfing photographer. But you must learn to swim a little better, because you can't always get the best shots from standing on the beach.
Anybody else who wants to apply for the role of surfing photographer, please contact me. (IMG:http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b170/Ralf_Dudat/Surfing/ISCIndonesianSurfingChampionshiplog.jpg) Indonesian Surfing Championships Despite the economic downturn, it has been a great year for the ISC (Indonesian Surfing Championships), and the final events of the official calendar are just about to wrap up. The Olympic Council of Asia, as well as the ASP World Tour (Association of Surfing Professionals), and PSOI (Persatuan Selancar Ombak Indonesia/Indonesian Surfing Organization) have forged ties with the ISC, and the future looks promising. Corporate sponsorship from Rusty, Quiksilver (and girls division Roxy), Billabong and Rip Curl have boosted the quantity and quality of the events. Coca-Cola Bottling Indonesia has been a major sponsor for the entire season, from the first events in April through to the finals in early November, by providing funds and publicity. Indonesian surfers and other athletes are currently riding a wave of change, as the world takes notice of their potential and their own government increases the support for sport. Last year's ISC Pro Surfing Champion Dede Suryana and veteran Indonesian surfer Tipi Jabrik, have joined the ISC board, and they have set up a few progressive initiatives, such as charity events to raise funds for the education of disadvantaged kids, and a program to clean up the rubbish on Bali's beaches and prevent pollution. A couple of facts I have picked out from the ISC website : • Marshello (or Marcello as he sometimes spells it) the Kuta lifeguard who was featured on the Australian TV show Bondi Rescue, provided some of the entertainment with his rock'n'roll band. (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/music.gif) (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/music-smiley-012.gif) (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/drums.gif) • The women's finals currently running at Keramas will most likely go to one of these ladies - Rohaye (aka Febri Rohmaningsih from Padang, Indo), Mina Nagasima (Japan), Gee Cormack (Sydney, Aust), Bonne Gea (Nias, Indo), Ayako Miya$hita (Japan). • Our favourite surfergirl from West Java, Gemala Hanafiah may be out of the running to win the finals trophy but she scored an honourable #17 from the international line-up at the Cimaja competition. • The men's finals currently running at Keramas could go to any of these guys - Made Artha (Indo), Jake Paterson (Aust), Granger Larsen (Hawaii), Alejo Muniz (Brazil), Lee Wilson (Indo), Gazali Hamzah (Indo), Wayan Merta (Indo), Raditya Rondi (Indo). • When I read that Mattia Morri from Italy got a tube ride on his backside I laughed, but then I realised that it meant that he rode with his "back" to the wave. As you can see in these pictures, Dede Suryana and Ayako Miya$hita and Suparman took the advice to avoid sunburn by getting lots of shade in the barrel. Dede (IMG:http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b170/Ralf_Dudat/Surfing/DedeSuryanaISCSanurBaliMay2009.jpg) Ayako_____________________________________________________________________Suparman (IMG:http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b170/Ralf_Dudat/Surfing/womens-ayako-0214.jpg) (IMG:http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b170/Ralf_Dudat/Surfing/SuparmanatCimaja2009.jpg) Bonne Gea eyes the sweet spot.________________________________________________Rohaye happy with her performance. (IMG:http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b170/Ralf_Dudat/Surfing/BonneGeaatCimaja2009.jpg) (IMG:http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b170/Ralf_Dudat/Surfing/RohayeISC2009.jpg) Rohaye and Mina Nagasima talk a bit in this short interview here on YouTube. You can see highlights and commentary from the Rip Curl 2009 West Sumbawa Pro here on YouTube. All images © Tim Haine ISC 2009. The ISC Bali office is located at : CV. Selancar Indonesia (ISC) Jl. plane tickets too ralf? that's what i miss about the ocean, some wax, a board, a rash guard...... Just got back home from the beach at Kilcunda. Pure and perfect srendipity that I arrived home and flicked on the TV while eating dinner, to find a documentary just starting about top surfer Laird Hamilton and rock musician Eddie Vedder. Classic finish to a nice weekend. Sorry, no plane tickets. Sponsoring some visitors later in 2010. But you will definitely need more than a rashie in the cold Southern Ocean. As for me..... I can't wait to get to Cimaja to surf with Gemala's crew. In the meantime, let's Party for Padang. (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) SurfAid International is hosting a series of entertainment events to raise funds to help families rebuild their houses around the earthquake affected region. There is one gig happening this Wednesday evening at the WhiteRevolver club in Bondi, Sydney.
