If you follow the import sports car scene you would know that Toyota teamed up with Subaru to build a RWD sports coupe with a Subaru engine, and Toyota design. It will be priced starting at $20,000.
From RoadandTrack (RoadNTrack is a very reliable and reputable car magazine/source) http://www.roadandtrack.com/article.asp?se...article_id=8122 We've reported on this before, but we now have stronger evidence than ever that Toyota is getting back into the affordable sports-coupe game with an all-new model priced at around $20,000–$25,000. This front-engine/rear-drive 2-door will reincarnate the spirit of the 1983–1987 Corolla Levin/Trueno (AE86), a car that's still popular today, especially among drift enthusiasts. According to our friends at Best Car magazine, Toyota's code name for this future sports car is 086A. That it's so similar to AE86 is no coincidence. Toyota is partnering with Subaru to bring this project to reality. In fact, most of the engineering seems to be coming from the company known for its all-wheel-drive rally cars. Powering the future coupe will be Subaru's 2.0-liter flat-4 equipped with a new direct-injection system, tuned to produce an impressive 200 bhp and 145 lb.-ft. of torque. We predict the car will weigh about 2700 lb., so expect fairly quick acceleration times, probably around 6.0 sec. to 60 mph. The suspension will consist of MacPherson struts up front and a multilink setup at the rear, with the chassis based on that of the Subaru Impreza and Legacy. Toyota will mainly be in charge of the car's styling. Although both Toyota and Subaru versions will be offered, the two models won't look much different, apart from badging — think Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe. The car is scheduled to appear sometime in 2011 or 2012. If this future car truly is a reincarnation of the AE86, Toyota and Subaru will have a big hit on their hands.

Nissan is reportedly counteracting this by puting out their own affordable RWD sports coup priced from $20,000.
http://blogs.internetautoguide.com/6265709...-rwd/index.html Nissan's 240SX Successor To Rival Toyota/Subaru RWD Road and Track have just confirmed reports that Nissan has similar plans, intending to bring its "affordable sports car" to market a year earlier than the Toyota. Nissan's new 2+2 rear-driver will revive the spirit of the 240SX, which has experienced renewed popularity after its discontinuation in 1998, mostly because of the popularity of drifting. The name of the future 2-door is still unknown, but we're fairly sure it won't be labeled 240SX (nor "Silvia," its Japanese moniker). It will be about the same size as the 370Z, sharing the same wheelbase of 104.3 in. Overall length is rumored to be 171 in., and will come in 4-seat/2+2 form. According to insiders, this small engine, equipped with VCR PCS, can produce up to 225 bhp. There's also talk of a hybrid and a full-electric version of this car, but those are just rumors at this point. Nissan hopes to keep the price right around $20,000 and beat the Toyota/Subaru sports car to the U.S. market. Expect the car to arrive in 2010 as a 2011 model.

the nissan and toyota may not have as nice numbers on paper but im pretty sure around a circuit it will be slightly faster than the cadillac. plus they won't even be in the same price range.

I was expecting a smaller sporty car from Nissan, but they're making it as big as the 370Z? OK, the 370Z is not that big, in fact, smaller than the S15, but damn, cars are heavy these days. This thing is going over 3000lbs for sure.
Oh, there was news, or a rumor, that the new Toyota coupe is gonna have a smaller, hybrid drivetrain and engine in order to meet the certain regulatory requirements that Toyota has to keep. Looks like it's gonna be fu-ked up. This post has been edited by kingofloss: Aug 29 2009, 03:49 PM |

I wanna see how that toyobaru's gonna perform. Looks decent, I wonder if they're using that new twinscroll design they put in the legacy. Should be something nice to see, and hopefully someone can fab a header like that for my STi. Intercooler piping is gonna be a b!tch though for front mount.

Where I am, I've been seeing a lot more Genesis coupes lately. At least one every time I go out driving.

Ill take the Nissan FR coupe...whenever the hell they'll release it in the U.S.
Nissan turbo engines are more reliable than Subaru's. I dont know what the reliability ratings are on the SR20DET, as they were never released for the U.S. market, but it seems pretty bulletproof since tuners love to drop it in other Nissans. |

Are they? I'm thinking of importing a '96 S14 Kouki from Japan in 2 years. Hoping to use it as a weekend cruiser, and add some simple mods to make it into an autox car. I've been wanting hit the local courses for a while now, heh.

Really, this news is pretty new to me. Well, Toyota is really good in design but I think their engine is good too. The Toyota Camry has good engine although it's not a sport type. Subaru and Toyota will make a good partner. I like the 2 rear drive and front engine car door which will reincarnate the Corolla model. I'm really excited to see this new super sportscar 086A.

Why the Subaru Engine? Toyota doesn't have a suitable Engine for the car?

Can't wait to see this combination. Toyota Sport in the past are a bit expensive. Maybe this time it is really affordable. I'm just thinking if Subaru engine will really fit well. Better check out other car parts compatibility too.
