Joan sets out to help lead the French army to victory against the English, which she does, until she is captured. Joan is found guilty of treason and is to be burned at the stake

Err. That's not quite it... Joan of Arc was, obviously from the town Arc in France. When she was around the age 14, the Hundred's Years War had begun (the war between France and England). During the Hundred's Years War, Joan claimed to be hearing messages from God telling her to take charge and meet the monarch (which was Charles at the time, I can't really specify the number). She sets off to Orleans, where the monarch was settling at the time, and demands to meet with the monarch, claiming she had messages from God and that she must complete her duty. So, the monarch created a test for Joan. He placed an impersonator where the real monarch usually sits, and placed himself somewhere inside the court, disguised as an observer. Legend says that Joan was not fooled, and walked directly to Charles without a doubt "with the help of God". Charles, now convinced, allows her to take control of the army. When Joan of Arc finally became the leader of the French Army, she was the first woman to wear warrior uniform. She established herself as a leader, and lead France to many victories against the English. Unlike many generals in her time, she was the first one in her army out there in the battlefield, and was the frontmost person at that. Her spirit raised morale, and stories circulated telling of events where she was able to dodge enemies' attacks. Unfortunately, she was not under the aegis of God when she was captured by England's ally, the Burgundys. She was immediately transferred to English authority, and placed under trial. She was convicted of being a heretic, and sentenced to burn at the stake. The Anglican Church would not recognize her as a saint until hundreds of years later. King Charles, safe at his base in France, made no attempt to rescue Joan of Arc from the English. As for the remaining of the war, so many victories were won and so much morale was boosted that the French were finally able to kick the English out of French territory. If it not for Joan of Arc, France would have been conquered and made a part of British territory. Hope that helps ^^ This post has been edited by Xai: Oct 28 2004, 07:50 PM |
