I heard the crowd is overwhelming there.) - Many things to do there - Clean & modern except the other side of the city - Really friendly people.. willing to help or do anything.. you'll find ajumah's cooking you dinner for free. (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) - Fun experience - Good food - Good budget - Busy people.. so there is going to be alot of bumping - Bad/heavy traffic - Nite life always alive 24/7 > I don't really go to niteclubs though.. but just to let some of you know. ^ Just a few things I heard Some more info by other people... mostly about the nite life (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/1549509.jpg) Desciption: You can see Brian here struggling to get the leaf with all of the contents into his mouth. Food went everywhere, and he ended up looking like an idiot. I made sure I pointed and laughed at him, as I always do. Best word of advice is to go ahead and just make it like you would a burrito. wrap and roll, and shove the whole thing in your mouth. The leaf is supposed to supress the heat some, not to mention the spices. Kill the rest of the spices by a shot of soju or a swig of beer or water. Or you can look like a dummy like Brian ;-) by:ClarkRB (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/501534.jpg) Description: A strip of resturants in the Shinchon district. These resturants are dubbed Suh Suh Kal Bi, literally meaning 'standing up kalbi'. First time went to one of these places, I realized this wasn't San Francisco. The place did not have a front door, nor even a front wall. It was one of those roll down metal walls usually reserved to protect store front windows during the night and the ocassional riot. The place had dirt floors, no chairs (thus the name, 'standing kalbi') and just five 'tables' These tables were just steel barrels modified to hold some charcoal and grill and a rim around the top to the barrel to hold some glasses and plates. Well obiviously, you don't go here for the decor, so getting right to the important issue, the kalbi. GOOD LORD the kalbi is good. I like to consider myself a connoisseur of kalbi. I've been to a few of the places in this 'standing kalbi' district and they've all exceed what I consider a great meal. by:genome408 (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/482810.jpg) Description: Pat-beeng-soo This is summer!! When summer become in Korea peoples enjoy this food. This is Adzuk bean sherbet. This is maden by girinding ice and cover with adzuki beans, milk, icecreams and fruits. And then mix! And eat! So cool~~!! by:startagain Dress Code: There is no dress code for western people and for the others i don't know, but the koreans go like they want to go, jeans, suits, whatever. Anything goes.. koreans dresses well. by:Ray_Erens (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/113689.jpg) (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/113693.jpg) Description: This area buzzes with nightclubs, eating places, and night shopping... The American Army and Marines' bad behaviour could spoil the fun. by: Ray_Erens Description:It's safe in South Korea. You can stay whole night on the street.^^ I live in Pusan now. It's 2nd capital in Korea. my favorite downtown is NamPoDong. every weekend, you can see many asian people. maybe if you're American you are surprised. it's very crowded. I know good live bar in Pusan university. In Pusan University, you can see many nightlife place. I recommend Soultrain. they have concert on every friday. band members are american. So many western people come here. Maybe you get some information in the bar. by: coolair1 Noraebang (Karoke): The (in)famous nore-bang or karaeoke. Legenday fun if you can stand the yodelling!! Comfy booths where you can wail away to your hearts content. You can buy beer and food here until some horrible hour in the morning. You can also have one of the staff sit in with you and press buttons as they're all in Korean. try it while you're here, its a blast. by: Elric (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/729483.jpg) Description: Many nightclubs are open till the following morning, they dont stop serving alcohol, i partied until 7am one night. bad decision. by: jessmorg (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/441826.gif) Description: Korea has no shortage of things to do at night. This picture is the main strip near my apartment (and I live in one of the 'quiter' areas of Seoul). Usually this street is packed with people. by: duckphan (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/1551282.jpg) Description: I like this photo. It's of Brian looking towards the big avenue of commerce, where a bunch of people have decided to use this day to buy clothing, and to more or less be seen. His eyes are fixated on a young Korean lady walking up the street towards us. He thinks she's smiling at him. She walks right by him. I laugh. This picture os sort of a proof on how everything in South Korea is stacked. Not just looking side to side at the shops, you have to look up as well, or you will miss many stores. A Korean outdoor mall may look small, but if you consider how stacked it is, then it's actually bigger than meets the eye. by: ClarkRB Description: My experience with Korea was this: there wasn't a 'spot' to go clubbing. You went to a city or burrough within a city. by: Redchyld (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/740140.jpg) Name of Shop: Dongdaemun Market Description: Korea's largest wholesale and retail shopping district has 26 shopping malls, 30,000 specialty shops, and 50,000 manufacturers. Within the ten blocks of the market area, you can find silks, clothes, shoes, sporting goods, plumbing and electrical supplies, electronics, office supplies, toys and just about everything else imaginable. Traditionally, wholesalers operated from 1:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and retailers were open from 1:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Buyers came from all over Korea to take advantage of the cheap wholesale prices during the wee hours of the morning, creating an unusual nightlife in the area. Now, the area stays open from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 a.m., allowing shoopers to do their thing almost any time the mood strikes them. by: jaam What to buy: Just about anything your heart desires.... by: jaam What to pay: You'd be limited by your budget. Although a few dollars can really get you some really neat stuff..... by: jaam |

What to buy: Each level has a different theme; i.e. fashion, accessories, bags, etc. My favourites are the small stalls that sell all kinds of interesting stuffs like key-chains, handphone accessories, bookmarks, fridge magnets, postcards, display accessories...with different varities...bound to have something for everyone! :-) They even have a level that catered to everything you need for weddings..such as the korean customs, accessories, household items..etc. But I would never forget what I saw when we reached the basement - with a sign that says "Imported Products" and.....I saw Burger King!!! by: ghweeh
(IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/639413.jpg) Description: Don't forget to buy a korean costume doll when you back home. Its a really lovely decoration for your home. : -) by: sunnywong Descriptoin: everywhere you go in korea, you will find nightlife. you can find anything that you desire. there is late night shopping, street side food vendors, $10 a beer bars, "whae g@@k bar" (foriegner bars) night clubs, jazz joints.... you get the picture. all you have to do is go out your door. please remember though, being a visitor in a country, you should act like a respectable visitor and everyone will treat you accordingly. however if you want to act like an idiot, korea was places for you to go also, a night scene for all. if you are on a short trip, say >one week, i would try the following. First night, go "foriegn style". there are tons of bars and nightclubs that cater to these needs. second night go street vendor hopping. there are certain location throughout korea where there are large concentration of these places. next try the korea bar scene... swanky.. yes.... expensive.. yes... but something to experience. if time permits and there is a native willing to take you and "babysit through the experience, go to a korean "booking" style joint. for those who never been or heard of a "booking" joint, it's interesting. koreans are friendly people who love to drink and chat. if you can not find somehitng ot do while you are here, there is something definately wrong with you. genome408 Description: Nam-sun tower with a spectacular view of Seoul. I just loved the city at night and felt very safe there. by: Bodhran Description: Going with some Koreans to the Karaokee was the best way to have fun by: acebiker Dress Code: Most are relaxed; however, if you are going out with Koreans you will find them in a state of dress ranging from semi formal to formal business (depending upon the age of the group you are with) by: ecologist (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/463289.jpg) Description: While in Seoul, a must see is the Hongik University area!! Loads of clubs and interesting people to hang with by: Ladebackchic Dress Code: anything you want, but be warned the Koreans are very trendy by: Ladebackchic Directions: Stay on the purple line and get off at Hongik University then just ask directions they love to help show you around by: Ladebackchic Warnings or Danger Guids Description: Seoul Is a Traffic Nightmare. Crossing the street makes the 'Roman Shuffle' look like a waltz. Here you virtually have to sprint across with the other hundred people that will cross with you. So many people are killed on the Streets of Seoul. To handle the sheer volume of traffic on the roads drivers have to be aggresive. Buses are the worst. I have seen people thrown to the floor in a moving bus, as the driver took a gap. cars aren't much better. I would never drive in Seoul, nor would I ride a bike. the traffic due to its volume is very dangerous. For instance, most city arterial roads are 5 lanes each way, 10 lane streets. And they are usually gridlocked. by: Hmmmm (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/1543123.jpg) Description: On a cold morning, Brian and I head out to Chuncheon Overground Mall. We are looking for some suits, as there was a dinner gala we were going to attend in Seoul that weekend. The dress code was quite upscale, and so we decided to go and check thing out. As we are walking, I notice something very odd. Something standing well above mine and Brian's height, a rare site obviously in Korea (Besides the dude who works at McDonalds we call Yao..he belongs in the circus) This mime looking character was just standing there, about 12 feet tall, perfectly still. It looked to me as if Chuncheon had put up a statue overnight. I walked over to take a look. At this moment, he makes a very sudden move right towards me, in which I jumped back and scream like a little girl. Brian is dying laughing, and blackmailing me that he is going to tell everyone. And he did. I have not lived it down yet. I walked back to this tall Stilted Korean, and this time, with my camera. He quickly flashed me the peace sign. And there you have it. My first South Korea warning, and the resulting picture. The evil scary mime peoples of South Korea. They seem to be numberous in Chuncheon in the spring during the mime festival, but this one was practicing a little early I imagine. by: ClarkRB Description: Korea is a very safe country, just be aware that a lot of people get very inebriated! If you are a Westerner, avoid showing too much affection to a korean boy/girlfriend, it can produce aggression usually only a bother in the big cities. Most drunks are harmless and happy!! by: Elric (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/441841.gif) Desciption: Watch out for this lady. She looks harmless, but don't be deceived. She was actually good friends with the first Emperor of Korea. by: duckphan (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/23134.jpg) Desciption: The war between the North and South is not over. Be on your best behavior if you visit the border areas and don't discuss Korean politics. If you are an adoptive parent of a Korean child, generally elderly people are pleased that the children have found loving homes and welcome seeing happy family pictures. Younger people are suspicious and I was horrified to hear from one college student that she thought we adopted them for body parts for transplants! I'd give my life for my children!! When she came to the states, we invited her to a Korean Lunar New Year party with hundreds of families (some blond moms in hanboks!) and homemade Korean food. She got the message and hopefully she passed it on when she returned to Seoul. by: Bodhran Description: The only real danger i saw was making sure that you were not run down by cars or motorcycles. In korea, cars have the right of way... motorcyclists will drive on the sidewalks if they cant get through on the street, or even just for the heck of it. you must get out of the way, it can be very dangerous. defiantely look both ways... 3 times.. before you cross the street by: jessmorg (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/919603.jpg) (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/919604.jpg) (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/1096791.jpg) Dooson Tower (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/184083.gif) Korean dancers at Seoul Nori Madang (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/1446712.jpg) |

Man, I need to move there. Wish my Korean was better. I would have gone to HS over there. It would have been fun seeing the differences between American schools.

MYONG DONG (IMG:http://photos.imageevent.com/ksurf3rgrl/video2/myong_1.jpg) (IMG:http://photos.imageevent.com/ksurf3rgrl/video2/myong_2.jpg) (IMG:http://photos.imageevent.com/ksurf3rgrl/video2/myong_3.jpg) Myong Dong is crowded with trendy Japanese tourists on a shopping/sauna holiday. The fashions tend to be young, brightly colored and deconstucted. Nothing fits quite right, but it's cheap anyway. There are loads of sports shops and sporty clothes (good for a hip hop night on the town.) Myong dong has brillant accessories such as scarves, earrings, shoes and especially sunglasses! Some of the popular shops are pictured above and below. ITAEWON
(IMG:http://photos.imageevent.com/ksurf3rgrl/video2/itae_1.jpg) (IMG:http://photos.imageevent.com/ksurf3rgrl/video2/itae_2.jpg) (IMG:http://photos.imageevent.com/ksurf3rgrl/video2/itae_3.jpg) Itaewon can be a bargain hunter's paradise! Itaewon is a good place for shoppers who like to dig through piles of junk to find hidden treasures. If you are looking for designer clothes which were manufactured in Korea which are slightly irregular and therefore rejected for export, this is the place to get it. The prices are phenomenal. Laundry, BCBG, Marc Jacobs, DKNY and Catherine Malandrino are some of the brands on sale here. Bear in mind that some of the clothes are from last year's collection and some of them don't fit well. You can always have them tailored. Nike, Adidas and the other sports shops on the street have good casual and workout wear and they have Western sizes available in footwear. The stalls on the street also sell good hats and imitation handbags. If you want fake Louis, Chanel or Tod's bags, follow the guys on the street that are saying `kabang`/ handbag. They will take you to an unmarked shop and bring you goods after you peruse the catalog. It's best to go in pairs and not by yourself, just to be on the safe side.
