Why Do So Many Lao Claim To Be Mixed Thai??? Options

I know alot of Lao people in my area claim to be mixed Thai and I find it strange that these Lao people are usually the ones that are big fans of Thai media and entertainment. I was at a Lao house party awhile ago and all they talked about was Thailand, Thai movies and Thai music. Alot of them showed animosity to Thailand and some even said they were mixed Thai so they can't hate the Thais like that. This isn't the first time I hear about Lao people's obsession with Thailand. Prior to that I know a Lao girl who is my homeboy's sister and if u see her room all you see is Thai celebrities hanging up her walls as posters, all she listens to is Thai pop music. Matter of fact her whole family listens to Thai songs. "I asked her why would you listen to Thai songs rather than Lao?" You know what she replied? She said "Because I can understand them and I am mixed Thai plus Lao music isn't as good and they don't make that much music." It's funny she said she was mixed Thai because her brother is one of my close friends and we had a conversation prior to that and he is one of those Anti-Thai Lao people like Savan he hates the Thais to the fullest. His family is so Lao I bet the only place they've step foot in Thailand was the refugee camps. It's funny that the sister claimed to be half-Thai and her brothers dispies Thai.


Don't get me wrong I watch some Thai movies (with subtitles) but I never say to people I am mixed Thai. Btw it was one of my Lao friend who got me into it.

I find it funny alot of Lao like to bash Thais but these are the same Lao people that rather listen to Thai music and open up Thai resturants than their own Lao resturant

Are they embarrassed to be Lao?

Agreed. Many Thai celebrity, singer, Muay Thai are from Issan.

The OP is a troll who is upset that his own Cambodian people, including himself, look up to Thais and claim to have Thai blood.

However, Laotians look down on Thais so there's no reason for them to claim Thai blood.

Has anyone provided proof yet of their allegations? Laotians are Tai, but please do not get that confused with THAI! We all know what Thai people are known for so let's keep that reputation in Thailand.

Just take a look at Laotian members on here and Cambodian members on here. Which group kisses up to Thais? I see Laotians making fun of Thais, but Khmers admiring Thais. That right there is proof that Cambodians are the ones who go around claiming Thai blood. LOL!

Not just Cambodians, but I know there are Hmong people who claim Laotian blood as well as Thai blood. For proof, just do a Google search for "Hmong model" and many of those models will list Hmong/Laotian/Thai as their ethnicity.

And recently, more and more Thai people especially celebrities are claiming Laotian blood. Is being Thai not good enough or something?

No Tai does not mean free. It was a wrong assumption of the word which has been taught wrong throughout our history. Tai means Tai, as in the people.

Are you a slave or are you a Tai. Tai were the ruling class of the people. The other class was the "prai" which consisted of conquered peoples such as the Khmer, Mon, Lao and Burmese (and any other ethnic group that was unfortunate enough to be enslaved)

It has just been widely accepted by scholars because we cannot question the royalty about the translation, because as always they are consider to never be wrong lol (I hate that about Thai culture) Thai is just Tai but in a different spelling. Thailand is Tailand. Land of the Tai people. That also include Tai Lao which is why there are 20 million of them in Thailand.

Lao has tried to become a seperate identity for generations, totally neglecting its Tai origins untill recently. This story about Lao coming from the Ai-Lao is total fabrication. Ive looked into the history of all SEA countries. Laos history is slightly more accurate than Thai in some areas (seeing as how the Chakri seemed to have fabricated a lot of BS) but in some areas such as origin, Laos is waaaaaay off lol
