I watched the movie gran torino for the second time yesterday. I have never been to the us, but i was wondering, is it really like what is depicted in the film, where hmong gangs terrorizing the hmong communities all the time, and hmong guys frequently get to go to jail?or the movie is out of touch with reality?
US Hmong members, where do you live in the us?what is it like living in the us? |

I think like all things, it's the depiction of extreme cases. I've known Hmongs here and they don't live like that but there are also news, talks of, and even a History Channel coverage of Hmong gangs that show the bad side of it.
Like Jersey Shore, not all young Italian Amerians from the Northeast are like that. But there sure are. |

Where are you from, France, Canada or Australia? Gran Torino blows everything out of proportion and exaggerates many things. It's a false depiction of Hmong people made specifically to target White audience, not to mention god-awful acting. If you're Hmong yourself you would know that many things in the movie are inaccurate depictions. Ex) the grandma spitting betel juice, NO HMONG WOMEN CHEWS THAT STUFF, I know other SE Asian ethnicities do but we don't! That scene was put in just to show how tough the grandma was as compared to Clint Eastwood. Hmong gangs were a problem in the 90's just like other SE Asian refugee immigrants but now must of those gangsters have settled down and started to realize the importance of family. As to the gangbangers today, they're just a bunch of sissy losers that have nothing else to do, 10 years from now, they'll are grow from this phase, settle down and realize their mistakes. These losers that do terrorize any community will get their sorry a$$es sent straight to jail. Though it was nice to have an Eastwood movie about us Hmong, Hollywood of course screwed it up like all other Asian-related movies. It's always the White guy that saves the day, huh? Anyway you want a Hmong American reaction to Gran Torino, watch this review and you'll understand how many Hmong-Mekas felt about the movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pz97JvbmvCw This post has been edited by bioshock: Jun 7 2011, 01:54 PM |

The movie had exaggerated upon many things because they needed to make it interesting to viewers and to set up the story for the hero, Clint Eastwood. When it comes to gangs....In real life, they are much worse than in the movie LOL.
