Rebels abduct, kill Tarlac policeman

TODAY Correspondent

TARLAC CITY - Communist guerrillas abducted two policemen here and killed one of them on Tuesday night, apparently in retaliation to the bloody dispersal of striking Luisita workers, which left at least seven people dead and scores injured.

Supt. Rudy Lacadin, chief of Tarlac Police, identified the fatality as SPO2 Froilan Tangca, 42, of Getha Subdivision, in barangay San Sebastian here. Tangca’s colleague, SPO2 Eduardo Jarillo, 40, of San Carlos City, in Pangasinan, was unhurt.

Lacadin said two women and a man went to the Police Community Precinct, in barangay San Isidro here, at around 8 p.m. to report a vehicular accident in the nearby sitio Molave.

Tangca and Jarillo, who were manning the precinct, agreed to accompany the three to sitio Molave onboard their police vehicle.

But upon reaching a grassy portion of the sitio, five gunmen emerged from a van and ordered the two lawmen to lie face down. They then hogtied the two cops.

The guerrillas took the cops’ M-16 rifle and .45-caliber pistol and their personal belongings.

Before fleeing, the rebels fired two shots and shouted “Mabuhay ang NPA (Long live the NPA).”

Jarillo was able to untie himself, and later saw Tangca with a gunshot wound, who was pronounced dead at the Central Luzon Doctors Hospital.

The attack was the fourth to be carried out by communist insurgents in Central Luzon since last week.

According to Salud Rojas, spokeswoman for the CPP-Central Luzon Regional Party Committee, rebel attacks were launched on orders of the NPA-Josepino Corpuz Command, the guerillas’ regional unit.

Shortly after midnight of Tuesday, NPA rebels operating in Bataan raided a cell-site of Globe Telecoms, in barangay Magsaysay, Hermosa, where the attackers seized a .38-caliber revolver of the cell-site’s security guard and set on fire the facility’s cabin.

Last Sunday, about 20 guerrillas of the rebels, in camouflage, raided the command post of the Army’s 69th Infantry Battalion in barangay Poblacion, Mexico, in Pampanga.

The NPA had vowed to avenge the death of seven demonstrators who were killed on November 16 during the dispersal of strikers in Hacienda Luisita and murder of Marcelino Beltran, chair of the militant Alyansa ng mga Magbubukid sa Tarlac, on December 8.
