from some forum:

Before I found that article, I used Ancestry.com and turned up a collection of Assanges from NSW. However, I couldn't look at the records without paying. It took my a while to come up with a search strategy to look for he name, not info about Wikileaks. I finally uses assange +surname and that got me the New Yorker article.

I just now looked for assange "ah sang" and got this
My Father's surname is Assange. According to my father, on his side I am part chinese and part Thursday Island. My grandfathers surname was George Assange and his father before him was also George, surname Ah-Sang. According to my father, my grand father was a night club singer who changed his name to Assange because it sounded french and he would be more readily accepted among his peers. I believe my great(?) grand father travelled to Australia for the 1800's gold rush.

The Chinese were early settlers on Thursday Island after the Aussie colony established a presence there in 1877. "Ah Sang" (no other name given) became a naturalized Australian in 1893 at the age of 31. Most Chinese, however, had the "yellow peril" problems that happened in lots of mostly white places.

In 1902, an Ah Sang was running a gambling ring on the Island.

Edited to add:
George Ah Sang was my Grandfather. He immigrated to Thursday Island some time in the late 1800's.
This name is the only one I have and got it from my mothers birth certificate. She was born on Thursday Island in 1891. My mother changed the Ah Sang to Assang when she was married. [same poster] According to my mother's birth certificate he was registered as George Ah Sang. Later the family of nine (9) children produced by him changed the chinese name to Assange.

And, a different source:
Ah Sang is not a surname. Chinese people always add the prefix "Ah" when calling someone by their given name. If your name is John, they would call you "Ah John". So most likely, "Ah Sang" was what they called someonee with the given name "Sang".
