It depends on how you define "South East Asian". If you mean South East Asian in the traditional sense like the pictures below, then I have to disagree with you. Lao people are NOT dark-skinned like the Thai and Cambodian.

Yea youre right im from southern laos. my family origin. however, we look lao.. my parents dont look indigenous or anything... they are just lao. remember laotians migrated all the way down south..... iono if people would think im dark.. or indiginous looking. I am ethnic lao.. i eat khao niew im buddhist.. i speak i read i write.... I DONT LOOK "KHA" if thats what you are trying to get at.. I probably look just as "LAO" as you.. actually they dont think im lao. I also find that offensive if someone told me i wasn't ethnic laotian when I have a strong lao cultural affiliation. I dont sell out to other groups. But then again when i think about it.. I actually do look different from the AVERAGE LAO i see in AMERICA which is tanned.. filipino or viet.. or khmer looking with tons of fat girls. Most people would never guess lao. Laotians are not light skinned like that..they just aren't its a tropical country.. northern laotians have the same skin tone as a vietnamese which is asian yellowish. East asians tend to be fair and homogenous..

Just because you call yourself Lao does not make you an ethnic Lao. Some may even consider you a troll from a certain neighboring country. LOL!

Please tell us where your family is from in Laos. My first guess would be southern Laos, right? If that is the case, you already know the story about southern Laos and how it came to be. Don't be too surprised if you found out that you're not an ethnic Laotian with ties to northern Laos. Remember that your ancestors might have been the natives who were conquered by our ancestors when we formed Lan Xang / Laos.

Anyway, Laotians don't look NEA and we also don't look SEA...we're somewhere in the middle because we don't look Chinese (NEA) and we also don't look Cambodian (SEA). However, we refer to ourselves as SEA because our country is in SEA. Laotians are light with medium size eyes. The nose bridge can range from high to low like any other Asian groups.

Just because you are dark like a Thai does not mean ethnic Laotians look like you. There's no need for you to feel uncomfortable with the fact that you might not be an ethnic Laotian. The new generation of Laotians are being more vocal about preserving our ethnic Laotian identity. Just because we allow anyone to refer to themselves as Laotian (regardless of their actual ancestry) does not mean he or she gets to represent "ethnic" Laotians. Calling yourself "baolao18" does not make you an ethnic Laotian. You get to claim to be Laotian all you want, but I highly doubt that you are an ethnic Laotian.

MY POINT IS.. laotians look like any other south east asian.. SOUTHEAST ASIANS ARE TANNED.We look oriental with whether deep or light tanned.

Oh and Savan you got some issues man. Lao people are just Lao people. Im Tai Puan/Sumnua and Central/Southern Lao folks are family man. Even the Tai groups in Yunnan intermarried with other ethnicities and the Han.
