Look, nowadays you will hear Lao music sung with what you consider "typically" sumniang Lao mostly in songs more or less related to Lum.
Many young people no longer get too excited about that. Some say it sounds bannork.

This is probably what you call Lao song with sumniang Lao?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRriUmazHBg...feature=related

How about this slow Lao song (Huk Kheung Thaang)? it may sound not Lao for you:
Original song or singer?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWUCARpQXT0...feature=related

The same song in newer versions sung by different Lao singers:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g89paa76hLY...feature=related
Which one sounds more sumniang Lao to you?

For comparison, the same song sung by a Thai singer basically in Lao: is this typically sumniang Thai?

In my opinion, Pop is more universal. Each country sings pop in their own country language.
Lao and Thai share so many similar words. We can detect so easily who are Lao and who are Thai when we speak to each other. But when we sing songs like Pop, the difference in accent become harder to detect.

Their is many reason why you think Lao accent sound like Thai is because Laos is behind 40 years of modern music singing style which sound like Thailand 40 years ago. Now you can see today in Thailand that Thai accent sounding like foreign english accent nowadays.

Also Thailand in the past never really have its own talented accent because modern westernized music was not quite understood. Which is why Thai used Chinese mandarin,Cantonese, teochew,Taiwanese and other etc Chinese Tonal to mimic Thai version of the updated song. In the past, Thailand did used Chinese ethnic tonal to mimic modern singing style 40 years ago. Plus most music tonal style 40 years ago used Chinese song in Thai version just to make people think its all Thai made tonal. icon_smile.gif

These clips below is an example of Thai mimicing Chinese ethnic tonal accent into Thai modern accent style.

Not sure why Thai claim we copy them since Thai old and new music are a copy of mostly Chinese accent in a Thai version language accent, by claiming it is Thai style accent talent created by Thai.

As you listen carefully with the old and new Thai song with Chinese you will hear it sound quite the same from tonal to accent style singing performance. After hearing these example songs. Thailand never created thier own tonal languages, but used many Chinese tonal ethnic singing style to mimic most Thai music singing style today. beerchug.gif

At least you know what is Lao, what is Thai.

Unlike some ignorant Lao American. LOL

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylVwDLCQ0eA...player_embedded

If you search Thai and Lao forum, you'll find that we had an argument over this topic in many threads. Why Lao people sing their songs with central Thai accent is because they have been influenced for centuries by us via Thai TV broadcast embarassedlaugh.gif

Agree with Khun Bounthy.
I think Lao Veing chan accent is very similar to Thai Bangkok accent than other Lao accent or E-san accent .
Listen this song.I hope you enjoy this song.Listen carefully you will know what I want to say. We should say pasadokmai to each other.

I don't think so If you have ever watched Lao Star Channel you will hear they speak with a Vieng Chan accent which is way different from the Bangkok accent but when it comes to singing, they just sing in our accent. I think they think it's more cool when singing in our accent than their own accent. icon_smile.gif

Many Thai new songs and new accent are borrowed from Chinese songs into a Thai version. beerchug.gif That's how they trying to tell everyone in Thailand that it is theirs own originality. embarassedlaugh.gif Plus Most Thai songs are always an off shot of most Chinese modern songs anyways, but Thai folks in Bangkok just don't want to know its from the chinese or is the orignality, not the Thai because they never really have thier own style tonal from the begining. beerchug.gif
