Thank-you to rasibiduk for pointing this out to me. But yes, Indonesia's national symbol is none other than the famous Garuda, from Vedic lore.....
(IMG:http://www.atributetohinduism.com/images/garuda_indonesia.gif) QUOTE The five cardinal points of the Indonesian constitution are also designated by the Sanskrit word Panchashila. Its airline is called Garuda, the Sanskrit name for the eagle carrier of Lord Vishnu. The old Javanese alphabet derives from the Pallava script of South India. One such inscription was found in the south-eastern region of Borneo on four octagonal stone pillars, written in Sanskrit in a 4th century Indian script. Indonesians still follow the Vedic year and call it Sakh-Samvat.

^If I am not mistaken Javanese, Bugisnese & Balinese alphabet is brahmi script not pallava script from south.
Javanese alphabet Origin The Javanese alphabet, also known as tjarakan or carakan, was ultimately derived from Brahmi alphabet, by way of the Kawi or Old Javanese alphabet. The earliest known writing in Javanese dates from the 4th Century AD, at which time Javanese was written with the Pallava alphabet, a variety of the Devanagari alphabet. By the 10th Century, the Kawi alphabet, which developed from the Pallava alphabet, had a distinct Javanese form. Javanese alphabet This post has been edited by Nusantara: Dec 29 2004, 11:36 PM |
