I think Apple is just trying to prevent Samsung from selling these new phones because they are complete threat to Apple - look at the review of the new Samsung Galaxy S 2 which is due out soon, based on what Samsung calls, Super Amoled Plus screen. Only Samsung can make these screens, and Apple themselves have to buy these screens from Samsung.

They're just suing each other to see if they can get any legal upper hand in their competition.

I got a funny feeling that Apple have just screwed themselves royally. Samsung has revealed today that they have been preparing for this day for three years! They have been preparing for all this time to sue Apple for 10 patent violations in Germany, Japan, and Korea. Samsung is also preparing to go after Apple in the United States for violating key technological patents.

Apple is suing Samsung for stealing Apple's outer style. But Samsung is going after Apple for key technologies. A big difference here. Samsung is next to IBM in number of patents filed in the world. They certainly have enough patents to defend themselves. Samsung is no easy pushover, they are a very ruthless company who can eat anybody that gets in their way.

Look at the iPhone 4's component make up. Samsung and LG components are the most important parts of the iPhone, and they hold over 40% of the iPhone components.

actually i think samsung is the one that's probably going to get screwed. if apple loses in the lawsuits and get pissed big time wouldn't they quit buying components from samsung?

Of course because they are interdependent on each other.

But the way I think of this, if Samsung wants to go for the jugular veins, they can cut out Apple completely and still win. Samsung's $7.8 billion revenue from Apple is only 4 percent of Samsung's total overall sales. If Samsung loses Apple as a customer tomorrow, it will be a big blow, but it would be far from a death blow. Because Samsung also supplies all the other makers like HTC, Motorola, Nokia, etc. Apple can try to divert their components to else where, but that can't be done so easily. Japan is having their problems recovering from the nuclear disaster, while the Taiwanese do not have the economy of scale that would allow them to produce massive number of highly compacted chips and super amoled displays at cost effective prices that Samsung can. In addition in terms of memory chips and displays, Samsung is top notch, beaten by no-one. Apple would not have a choice other than Samsung who would lower their prices to Apple's competitors.

For now, I don't think both Apple and Samsung will do anything to jeopardize their relationship. That's because they're probably tied together in long term contracts which they can't break. But in the long run I think Apple will try their best (as they've always done) to not rely too much on one supplier and they will try to diversify as best as they can. Samsung on the other hand, will remember this and will plan their next defense years before it happens again (as they've always done), and they will continue to encroach on the iPhone market with the Android phones with super hardware.

How is that gonna only hurt Samsung? If apple stops buying Samsung components, that's also going to hurt apple. You see, Samsung has been the sole distributor to iphone components ever since the first iphone debuted in 2007. Apple can go elsewhere to buy the components but that's gonna take time and demand-supply gap would only go wider. They are only going to shoot themselves in the foot by doing so.

Any movements from both companies thats gonna cause a pain on both sides, it's gonna affect on both. Not only one.

I'm not so sure, Apple probably already has potential back up suppliers for the parts in question in place to start producing the minute Samsung stops producing those parts. I don't think Apple would take such a gamble without having suppliers that could be ready to start producing the minute Samsung quit producing those parts for them.

Samsung supplies Apple in long term fixed price contracts. Apple knows that Samsung can't break the contract. As for Apple trying to diversify away, the closest one is a Taiwanese company. Apple can ask them to manufacture the processor chips that go in the iPhone and iPads, but to get from approval to production, they're estimating at least fourth quarter of 2012. Apple also have to be careful they don't run into Samsung's patent violation charges, because Apple collaborated with Samsung to make those processors. This story was in the Financial Times news. Experts are saying Apple is still stuck with Samsung no matter what.
