If cheap is the only thing you're after, you can take a flight to SGN and then spend another $100 to fly up to Hanoi.

Problem is I've never done this before, so I don't really know what to do and I don't want to ask my dad about it because I'm thinking I should take care of the money on my own.

Unless he's very difficult or stuck-up or snobbish with money, otherwise I don't see what you can't just ask him or your mum for advice on money matters. Taking care of your business doesn't mean learning and doing everything by yourself all the time. I'm sure he will be very proud to know his beloved daughter needs his advice on anything.
I have always taken care of everything by myself since I was 18, and trust me, a lot of times I wish I'm close enough (physically and figuratively) to my parents to ask them for advice, even if it's irrelevant in a western context. |

Look. If I ask my dad about this, he will pay for the ticket. He will take care of the ticket.
I don't want my parents to take care of the ticket. I want to take care of them myself. I don't want to always ask them for money |

Anyone know I can get the cheapest ticket to fly from Orange County to Hanoi in early August? Early August is still part of high season for international travel. Best way to find out a discount ticket is start with Travel section of the Sunday newspaper. i.e. Los Angeles Times Those fares you will see in the advertisement are usually base fare before tax for weekday travel. Ask total fare by calling travel agencies. Some advertisements are misleading because they didn't add fuel charge, tax etc so make sure to ask for total fare including everything. And then compare those fares with other internet based prices such as priceline, hotwire, airline websites etc Also, some travel agencies that are specialized in bulk tickets to Asia (in Koreatown, Little Tokyo, Chinatown etc ) offer special discount fare. Orange county (John Wayne) airport doesn't serve international flights to Asia. So, typically you will have to fly out of LAX to Hanoi via Seoul (Korean/Asiana), Taipei (China Airlines), Beijing (Air China). United Airlines flies to Hochimin city from San Francisco via Hong Kong but I am not sure if they offer through fare to Hanoi. Hong Kong based Cathay Pacific Airlines has something called "All Asia Pass". The deal is this pass allows you to travel many Asian cities within 21 days, 1 months. All of those options are possibility. This post has been edited by rvsp: May 2 2011, 09:27 AM |

Look. If I ask my dad about this, he will pay for the ticket. He will take care of the ticket. Ok then. Maybe you're still too young for your parents to think you've grown up enough to be independent about these things. Or maybe because you're a girl. For me I know if I want to pay, they'll let me. In fact I've never even had the chance to ask, because like I said I've left home since I was 18 and ever since then had been doing everything by myself. It's kind of ironic that we all yearn for what we don't have: you for a chance to be independent, and me for a chance to be protected and taken care of. If all you want is to be able to arrange to buy a ticket then it's not that hard. Assuming you do have a credit card (or a bank card that can be used as a credit card) then you should be able to search and buy it online. Cheapest price is always from online, if you go through travel agents it will never (or almost never) be as cheap. Unless you have specific preference (many Vietnamese prefer Eva Airlines from Taiwan for some reason, that is also a very expensive airlines for Vietnamese) then you may have no choice but use a travel agent. |

Do you know any good website to purchase tickets? nvm, you said it right there. In your experience, which of the three airlines to Hanoi you mentioned is best? (food is very important. I don't want to get on an airplane that serves me bad food) This post has been edited by XigonCongchua: May 2 2011, 02:09 PM |

I don't want to get on an airplane that serves me bad food) Kayak is a good website. It gives you all the different fares from 6-7 different other sites such as priceline, traveler city, airfare.com, travel-ticker, one travel, and cheapOair. Once you find the site that offers the best fare, you can go to that site to book and confirm. http://www.kayak.com/flights Airline food on coach class (assuming you are flying on economy) is not much different from one to another. You know, they don't actually cook in cabin, right? Flight attendants simply reheat the frozen food. I once had half thawed croissant and that was terrible. LOL Usually, Asian carriers provide slightly better food but not always. Most common choices are either chicken or Pasta, sometimes beef or Pasta. Meat will come with rice or potato. |
