I was just wondering if anybody knows weather or not exfoliation makes you age faster. To me, scientifically it seems like it would. Taking the top layer of cells off, and forcing more to be created seems like it would increase imperfections in the DNA (when a cell is copied, it's not exactly the same and bits of it get cut off every time). Does anyone have some information on this? I'd hate for my face to become older than the rest of my skin.

not really. exfoliation removes the top layer of dead skin cells, and may actually be used as part of a healthy skin care routine. just don't be rough on your skin, choose one suited for the face and a different one for the body, and don't do it everyday. exfoliating makes skin softer.

Right, removing the top layer of dead cells causes a new layer of living cells to appear, but doesn't that kill those new cells faster then, creating the need for more cells, with more imperfections to be created? |

that's what i meant by not going overboard on the scrub. don't use coarse body scrub on the face, be gentle with the skin. exfoliating helps skin renew itself and has little to do with aging. other factors like smoking, diet, and sun exposure play a much bigger part.

Someone may have a better idea about genetics, but from what I understand you don't die from your cells slowly duplicating your body wrong. DNA seriously is like a time bomb. It just stops. Say you are 40, and you clone yourself a new baby from your current genes. That baby will have a severely shortened lifespan. Perhaps its due to what you said about the duplication being slightly off, as I'm not sure, but I'd imagine you'd just turn into a crazy mutant instead of dying.

i heard when men scratch their butt it adds to their 'butt erosion'...
exfoliating is suppose to bring out the best in your skin, removing dead skin cells and what Lil Yangstah said |

i dun think skin exfoliation has any thing to do with DNA. U r just removing the dead skin cells as u exfoliate. Just dun do it too often and remove too many layers of your skin or u'll end up with sensitive skin.

The reason why aging skin has that paper-like look is because the cell turnover rate is very slow, and the top layer doesn't exfoliate and regenerate itself fast enough. When you exfoliate, you're basically helping the cell turnover process along.
I agree with whoever said to stay away from harsh scrubs; instead try an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) peel. It's a very mild peel, and it works wonders for your skin texture, trust me! I'm currently using some myself and am very pleased with the results. This post has been edited by starry: Jan 4 2005, 01:23 AM |

Almost Most of the exfoliation in the market is BAD. there are a few good that can help skin look younger.

I had mentioned a lot of time in my old posts under exfoliation. There are AHA option, BHA option and Tretinoin option. Only good one is ok.
