3,000 female foetuses aborted in Taiwan
Up to 3,000 female babies were presumed 'missing' from Taiwan's population last year due to illegal sex-selective abortion, an official was cited by media as estimating on Sunday. Abortion practices caused the gap, Chiu Shu-ti, director-general of the Bureau of Health Promotion, reports AFP, quoting the United Daily News. The Bureau last month launched an investigation after it found that 10 out of every 11 babies delivered in a clinic in New Taipei City last year were boys. Nine out of every 10 babies delivered in a Taipei City hospital during the same period of time were also male. Government officials suspected that doctors at the two medical institutions might have conducted the illegal abortions after expectant parents had viewed ultrasound scans which allowed them to predict the sex of their baby. Under Taiwan's law, any doctor found guilty of conducting such an abortion may face a fine of up to TW$500,000 (RM52,775). But despite the law, the practice has been in common on the island, as in China and some other Asian countries, due to traditional cultural norms which value males more than females. http://www.dailychilli.com/news/11602-3000...orted-in-taiwan |

See? Told you all that China would still have a gender imbalance because of preference for males. India's is just as bad as China's without a one child policy.

How come if there's any bad news coming from Taiwan - they're all of a sudden "Chinese"? Any good news and people will say, "They're not Chinese! This is a TAIWANESE achievement!".
The truth is that Taiwan is no better than the mainland. A bunch of Taiwanese guys will be single. At least in the mainland it is illegal to have gender selective abortions and aren't even allowed to know the sex of their babies. |

It's capitalisms fault. Minimum wage is 100nt/hr which is about $3/hour. Having a female greatly increases the odds of having a large financial burden.

^ So without capitalism, they all of a sudden wouldn't have a preference for males? You must not realize that in some Asian countries favoritism of boys is rooted in their culture and dates back many centuries. Of course if capitalism wasn't in the picture, I'm sure things would change some. However people will always prefer sons over daughters. And that really has nothing to do with capitalism.
