I've been writing a small document on several interviewing tips for my friends who are having trouble looking for jobs. It's geared towards women, when I address the dress code, but feel free to add anything else that you think is important.
Dress in a two piece business suit, clean pressed/ironed properly. Do not wear anything too flashy. It’s best to err on the side of conservatism. No skirts above the knee. 55% of another person’s perception of you is based on how you look according to Image Dynamics. Solid color, conservative suit (navy, black, or grey), coordinated blouse, moderate shoes, limited jewelry, neat, professional hairstyle, tan or light hosiery, sparse make-up and perfume, manicured nails, portfolio or briefcase with multiple copies of your resume. Do not bring your cell phone (or keep it on silent and hidden), gum, iPod, coffee or soda, take out any facial piercings (earrings only), and cover tattoos (if you have any). Use a breath mint before you enter the building. Knowing as much as possible about the company can make your interview more interactive and can help you get ahead in the competitive job market. Practice answering typical interview questions so you’ll be prepared and comfortable during the actual interview. Plan on what you wear ahead of time and polish your shoes. For certain situations, sending a thank you email or letter really go a long way. It reinforces your interest in the position. Use your thank you letter as well to address any issues and concerns that came up during the interview. In the thank you letter, input your name, address, phone number and email address along with their information as well. Greet with Dear Mr./Ms. Last name. Single space your letter and leave a space between each paragraph. Use a plain font like Arial, Times New Roman, or Verdana. Select a font size of 10 or 12 points. |

Here's also a list of general questions that are asked.
1. What problems have you encountered at work? 2. What do you expect from a supervisor? 3. What did you like or dislike about your previous job? 4. What have you learned from your mistakes? 5. What were your job responsibilities? 6. What were your starting and final levels of compensation? 7. Why did you resign or leave your previous job? 8. What have you been doing since your last job? 9. What is your greatest weakness? 10. What is your greatest strength? 11. How will your greatest strength help you perform? 12. How would you describe the pace at which you work? 13. How do you handle stress and pressure? 14. What motivates you? 15. How do you evaluate success? 16. What interests you about this job? 17. Why do you want this job? 18. What can you do for this company? 19. Why should we hire you (I’ve been asked this in almost every single interview btw) 20. Is there anything I haven’t told you about the job or company that you would like to know? (Always have at least two backup questions like ‘What is the company’s management style?’ or ‘Would you like a list of references?’ or ‘If I am extended a job offer, how soon would you like me to start?’ or ‘What don’t you like about working here and what would you change’?) |
