Since the reign of Jayavarman VII who became the first Buddhist king, Hinduism was no longer widely practiced throughout Cambodia. I do not know much about which Hindu gods that past Khmer Kings worshipped, but I do know that Lord Shiva and Vishnu was heavily revered by the Khmer Kings at time. Surely, more Khmer members will enlighten you more on this subject.

Thank you for all those video links.Though India inspired Khmers I would say Khmers had done a splendid interpretation of indian art in their own unique way.All those embellishment on walls like around the apsaras are totally Khmer style, such are not found in india and also the Naga insignia incorporated almost everywhere in Angkor Wat is so beautiful.Nowwhere in indian art exist such a beautiful rendering of Naga.Though the ideas are all Indian the interpretation is very much Khmer unique style.
I would really like to see Angkor wat before I die.And to all Cambodians:May each and everyone of you rise like a lotus, just like King JayaVarman II rose like a lotus even without the help of the stalk.May your Tonle Sap be ever brimming in plenty and may every Ploughing ceremony bestow you harvests of plenty. |

I don't much about Shiva god. But Khmer do practice Brahman till now a day, Especially, Vishnu. The well known Vishnu call Ta Reach in Angkor Wat, "Ta mean Grandfather, Reach mean King." Ta Reach is the most respected and powerful Artistic for nationwide worship. Even due Cambodia well known as Buddhist, But by soul we still practice Brahmanism daily life. Every public place in every cities and provinces in Cambodia have the status of Vishnu. Like in my province Kandal, there is a very big status of Vishnu in the city gate and another in the public park. |

In all those youtube videos King SuryaVarman is named "shield of sun".the correct word that should be used is "armour".The word "Varman" means "one who wears armour" and it signifies Kshatriya warrior ruling class.
Can anyone please tell me about King JayaVarman II's "Devaraja" ritual and which Deity did he invoke? |

You see the people in angkorian times worshipped our kings like they were actual gods that came down to earth in human form and whatever labour were being asked they would commit into doing what ever it was, even enduring the harsh building under water or any other complex duties they were asked. Like building or constructing under the hot sun all day. They felt as though doing this was a blessing from the gods themselves. The kings carried themselves with so much pride in the lord they devoted too, that the peole just saw them as god kings. This is why 70 percent of cambodians are naturally darker in complexion then the other asians, besides india. The trading from india had influence us because of the moonsone weather, indian travelers had to live in cambodia for months on end until the weather was safe to travel home again. This is how our religion began to form from the teachings of these indian traders, who lived with the khmers, taking wives and having children and so forth. I see many khmers who look really indian, I can say my family looks indian. My mother my aunts my cousin, even my grandma they are all so beautiful. I have seen a lot of khmers with such beauty that resembles india beauty. Not to sound concieted but its just true. My bf is laos. And he agrees that most of the cambodian women here in america look indian. |

In hindu culture it is believed "Among the elephants,Airavata is the foremost, among the horses Uchhaisravas is the foremost and among mankind the Monarch is the foremost".Airavata and Uchhaisravas were created during the Great Churning of the ocean. It is understandable why Kings are highly revered even to the extent of being representation of god on earth.
I hail from the state of Tripura in the northeast of india and Iam of TibetoBurman stock known as "Tiprasa".Tripura was a Hindu kingdom before merging with India and our kings were all "Tiprasa",Tibetoburman people. So I don't look like a typical Indian rather i can easily pass off as someone from southeast asia. Khmers to me mostly don't look like Indians.Actually they need not look like Indians,I like the way they look already. And khmer women are famed for their beauty too! I saw in an Apsara dance Video |

In Cambodia, Lord Shiva is known as Preah Esya in Khmer. Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, Lord Krishna might be popular in India But Lord Indra ("Preah In" in Khmer) is the most popular Hindu Gods in Cambodia. His name is mention in almost every ancient Khmer religion text, legend and folklore. Lord Indra always come down and save the Khmer race in most legend stories. This is why Lord Indra is popular in Cambodia. |
