Kung fu, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Viet Vo Dao etc... The Martial Arts of East Asia are different compared with the kickboxing martial arts in southeast asia. In China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam the idea of martial arts is often linked with philophical thought such as Confucianism, Buddhism, and especially Taoism. Which influence the "duty" of a martial arts warrior. In addition to that, eastern martial arts masters were often doctors, physicians, military figures or religious people who studied body mechanics, physics, and energy change. In affect the martial arts in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam show techniques that can be effective regardless of sex or age.
for example: not to diss kickboxing or anything (because i think its very powerful) but its only good when you're young and strong. When's the last time you saw an old kickboxing master still fighting? in eastern martial arts a master can be 70 some years old and still kick @$$. Anyways, share your comments and thoughts on any of the eastern martial arts here. |

Taekwondo is now more of a martial sport then a martial arts. There are some real combat versions of TKD but the majority of them outside of the korean peninsula are sports. It evolved into a sport because the s.koreans wanted it to be accepted as an olympic sport (so there were a lot of safety rules). They are just point sparring.
There are two organizations that I know of that teaches TKD, they are very different from each other: WTF- Most schools in the WTF organization are sports or point-sparring schools. There are a few combat schools. ITF- Teaches mostly martial arts and self-defense. This post has been edited by YManchun: Jan 9 2004, 02:11 PM |

Hapkido is another korean martial arts right? i heard its similar to judo but with more kicks. |

also in wing chun every blok is designed 2 quikly transform into an attack n every attack is also designed to transform into a blok. which also makes da wing chun pratitonar a very unpredictible opponent. (by in chance whoami do u do vo vi nam?) |

Though im not a practitioner of wing chun i have been taught some of it and its concepts. the trapping drills are fun and useful. Do you practice Vo vi nam? or do you know anything about it? i heard a little about it and its interesting. theyre known for their flying scissor kick techniques which i think originated from defeating mongol invasions. |

When's the last time you saw an old kickboxing master still fighting? Free Boxing was probably developed out of necessity. It was used by Angkorian warriors in defense of the Khmer kingdom. The armies consisted mostly or entirely of young men, so these types of martial arts would suit them quite well. |

Well, i practice White Lotus Gung Fu, created by my sifu, grandmaster Douglas Lim Wong. its really a combination of both Southern and Northern styles of Gung Fu. i think its great. Not only does it teach me how to better defend myself if the need arises, but i also get a good workout as well. We get to do fingertip, knuckle, wrist, and one-arm push ups, tons and tons of crunches, plenty of horse stance training, and body conditioning! now don't that just sound fun? (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/badteeth.gif) - but really, its absolutely worth it.

ok, well, i can't really describe too much of the system, as i've only been taking this for two years now, and i'm only at level two. well, speaking of levels, there are 10 levels. you usually pass level one after one year. after that, it takes way longer to pass level 2, like a couple of years. once you reach certain levels you get trained in more weapons, and forms, stances, and excercises become harder. once you reached level 8 i believe, you've attained master, or sifu, status. But the Grandmaster of my style gets to be level 11 since he's the one who created our style. he used Wing Chun before. all i can really say about the style is that its its a combination of southern and northern Gung Fu. As i know of right now, we have 5 sifus, sifu Tom (Chinese i think), sifu Jennings (really funny black guy), sifu Carrie Wong( the grandmaster's wife, Japanese), sifu Travis( grandmaster's 18 year old son.....damn, 18 yrs old and already a master!), and grandmaster Douglas Lim Wong.
