Tokyo introduces women-only trains to prevent, groping Options

TOKYO — Women-only cars in Tokyo were launched for the first time in morning rush-hour trains on Monday in a bid to prevent groping.
Some other regions have already been using women-only cars, but Tokyo was slower to adopt them due to crowded platforms and the prevalence of mutual trackage systems.

The move was launched in line with a call from the Land, Infrastructure and Transportation Ministry.

The measure started Monday on the Saikyo Line of East Japan Railway Co and Rinkai Line of Tokyo Waterfront Area Rapid Transit Inc, which have a mutual trackage agreement.

Some other lines in the area, operated by nine private train companies, and the Toei Shinjuku Line plan to launch women-only cars starting May 9.

At Ikebukuro Station for the JR Saikyo Line, female commuters and students could be seen boarding women-only cars coming from Saitama Prefecture, while some apparently unaware men were seen dashing into the cars as well.

Female passengers generally had a good impression on the new system, with one saying, "I feel relaxed because there's no chance of being groped." Another said, "It was less crowded than I thought. I will use it tomorrow, too."

Only one women-only car has been designated in each of the Tokyo-bound trains running through around 9:30 a.m.

The Keio and JR Saikyo lines have already been running women-only cars for trains outbound from Tokyo late at night.

The subway in Yokohama has already been running women-only cars during the morning rush.

In February, Tokyo police said the number of reported groping incidents on Tokyo trains surged about threefold to 2,201 in 2004 from 778 cases in 1996. (Kyodo News)

Hmmm , for some reason I'm not suprised they would have something like this. But just the whole idea of it is sad period, perhaps instead of building seperate trains they might also want to study in further details of the problem and try to correct it.

actually now that i think about it i remember reading somewhere that alot of women are actually groped on the train and usually no one does a thing to stop it. I kind of feel bad for the women who have to go through crap like that. they should introduce trains where people like me can beat up people who gropes other women, i play too many violent games and watch to many movies, besides that, i listen to heavy metal and $hit like that, so i need to fume my aggressive behaviours on others who deserve it before i explode and leave a huge crater with lots of innocent casualties, yes im a little insane

The trains are so packed that touching and groping is so easy and sometimes you can't even tell who did it. The problem is overcrowding.
