i posted this on feb 18, in that thread of haters towards the nguyen last name. i thought it would clear things up, but so many posters posted afterwards, it just got swallowed up in page counts.
so i came back for a visit, and that thread is still going strong. some people hate the name, and some like it. some dont know why it is so common, and some are stupid enough to think it comes from mass incest and inbreeding. dont be haters when you are ignorant of that you wish to hate. QUOTE (vn1234 @ Feb 18 2005, 02:09 PM) this is sad to hear. been a long time since ive visited af hating your own culture, makes your very ignorant, especially if there is meaning to why we have common last names. the names bind us to the great dynasties of viet nam, so that their presence can always be remembered. obviously this has failed with people like you devilish and tam ca. if you recognize that the nguyen, le, and tran names are names of kings, then perhaps you would think different. how many cultures on the earth have meaning in their last name linked with royalty as a symbol? the common name unites us. you should also notice that the vietnamese structuring of names has a prominent middle tag. ex: nguyen dinh toan. unlike the western culture where the middle name is almost unimportant, in vietnamese it is there. that is the unique portion of our names if you want difference. if you knew a little bit of history, that middle name is infact our family tag. notice how it's transfered to children from the father to the sons, and the mother to the daughters. we have both - a clan tag to link us with dynastic times, and a middle name that is extremely varied. our naming system is different, so dont use the western methods to judge it. next time, don't just say your name in two parts, pronounce it fully in the tryptch it was designed as and explain to your friends how you have both a multitude of names in vietnamse and a common link to kings. everyone named according to viet fashion by their parents will have 3 and sometimes more (rare, but does occur) parts to their name. in english/american culture, middle names are chosen like first names, they are not transfered. you can even look this up in a dictionary somewhere and the explanation will indicate that middle names are chosen without relation to anything. viet middle names are transfered. hence the link and relation to family lies there. it just so happens that during registration in western schools, no one cares about the middle names, but go to viet nam and you will never ever see registration of only two parts, always 3 parts to a name. hopefully you haters will change your mind now on viet last names. I'm proud to have and share the surname Nguyen with many other Vietnamese around the world. It holds my family reputation and the reputation of many others. As a Vietnamese, we should hold onto what is dear to us, which is ever lasting proof that we belong to our fathers who has given us his family name.
Although he may age and die one day, we will at least carry on his gift he gave to us on our birth day. |
