Etta slams new cola drink for 'Virgin' ads

Akbayan Rep. Loretta Ann Rosales on Friday called for the pull-out of the Virgin Cola ads for containing double meaning messages that offend the Filipino women, DZMM reported.

Rosales, a Martial Law victim who fought for women's and teachers rights, said the print media campaign of upstart Virgin Cola, which carries the lines, "Dumarami na ang Virgin sa Pilipinas (There are now more virgins in the Philippines) and "More Virgin to satisfy you," smacks of contempt against women.

The Virgin ads came out in various newspapers this week and is expected to be followed with TV and radio campaign.

Rosales said the cola ad campaign is even worse than the controversial advertisement of Distilleria Limtuaco which used the lines, "Nakatikim ka na ba ng Quince Aņos" (Have you tasted a 15-year old?)," to launch a new brandy product.

The brandy ads received flak from several concerned sectors, mostly from feminist groups.

Rosales called on the Advertising Board to immediately order the local distributor of Virgin Cola to pull-out its ad campaign.

Virgin Cola is the newest softdrink brand to enter the local soda market already dominated by Coke and Pepsi.
