do the countries such as afghanistan, uzbekistan, kazahkistan, etc. have anything in common (sorry if spelled wrong btw...) what does stan mean? and do these countries have common ties? where are their people descended from? any other relevant facts to know about them?? just wondering... thanks |

The suffix -stan or -sthan means in Persian "home of", and appears in the names of many countries and regions, especially in Asia. For example, "Turkmenistan" would mean "the home of the Turkmen."

It is a Persian word and crawled into Sanskrit and then into Pali as "tan." So in Asian languages heavily influenced by Theravada Buddhism, this word exists as "tan" such as in Tan Sua (paradise).

(think russian)heh. justa random fact. haha. oh, and all the countries with part of the former USSR but all became republics in 1991, along with the baltic states and western european countries such as belarus. (with the exception of pakistan and afghanistan, which weren't part of the USSR) |

well in Hindi and Urdu 'stan' means land. so lot of pakis and indians say Hindustan instead of India.
whenever i goto my fams house in middle east or dubai, they never call it India, they refer to it as Hindustan as a lot of arabs do. |

i have another question...why aren't these countries ever brought up a lot in the news or something or in the media??? i mean news give events from around the world but i never hear from places such as the "stan" countries....
and also in school, they don't really talk about those countries in history/geography class... i wonder why... and i wonder what life is like in those countries...are they developed or developing? |

People of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyrzstan are mixed mongoloid/caucasoid hybrid race, but they look more mongoloid than anything.
kazakhstan: (IMG:http://www.nevadawier.com/portfolio/graphics/kazakhstan-1955a.jpg) Kyrgyzstan: (IMG:http://www.ios2003.com/photopages/kc_zoo/kyrgyzstan.jpg) The rest of the "stan countries" are caucasoid..ie pakistan, afghanistan, tajikstan, uzbekistan. with mongoloid tribes here and there, and of course many of the people are mixed with mongoloid from the invasion of genghis and the mongols. People in uzbekistan are a mixed Mongoloid/Caucasoid race, but look predominantly caucasoid, Uzbeks take their name from Uzbek Khan. |

wow, i can see a trace of mongolian in some of those pics...especially the eyes
how long did the mongols stay in these "stan" territories when the mongolian empire was thriving? i assume it must have been hundreds of years. just like that one minority in iraq that has been persecuted for many years....the kurds. are they descended from the mongols as well? just wondering... |
