Well actually your correct. Monique Vinh Thuy born Monique Baudot, Bao Dai's last Widow was technically a princess and not an empress. Not to mention they got married in 1977, when Bao Dai was probably already exiled from the country.

QUOTE (Byron @ Jul 11 2005, 08:00 PM) I didn't say she was. I said she was the last "Vienamese Empress" as in Kinh empress. Well actually your correct. (IMG:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/23/Princess_Monique_Vinh_Thuy.jpg) (IMG:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4e/Princess_MoniqueVinhThuy.JPG) Yea she was technically not a "queen". I think the translation of empress is quite arguable. |

I wonder if she would have been a Queen if Bao Dai was still in power in 1977?

QUOTE (Byron @ Jul 11 2005, 08:05 PM) http://users.panola.com/vietnam/NamPhuong.jpg ^^ She's the queen. Interesting fact though one of the forbidden pratice in Nguyen dynasty is that there should be no tittle as "queen", but later Bao Dai broke it and made her the queen. So she's the first and last queen of Nguyen dynasty lol |

Nam Phương Hoàng Hậu was a Southern Vietnamese. Bảo Ðại had her as his queen and only wife upon her request. He had no 'cung phi' whatsoever (a rare exception). However, later on Bảo Ðại broke his promise when he married another woman. As i remembered, Nam Phương Hoàng Hậu was lonely and died in loneliness. She was highly respected as bậc mẫu nghi. But so sad ... and please don't say she was French or mixed or anything, but a Southern Vietnamese who was the mother of the nation.
Another picture of a Mandarin in the Nguyễn dynasty: A Binh Bộ Thượng Thư ... (something like Secretary of Defense) (IMG:http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a383/my_yiyi/BinhBoThuongThu.jpg) |

They didn't still use Chinese characters in the 20th century, did they? |

In the picture, "A Mandarin named Phan Thanh Giản" the hat bears a striking resemblance to some old Korean hats worn by court officials. Really similar. Wish I had a picture to post.
