hi, my name is PHUT!
I could bore you with a life story of me, so, I guess I will do it. I was born in Oakland, California. My parents are from Hong Kong. I grew up as a normal Chinese kid. I had rice every dinner, I had to go to Chinese school. the thing was that I grew up in the American life. the first band I ever listened to were the Beatles. Even though I knew Chinese, it could have been so much better. I would watch some Chinese movies, but I was heavily influenced by the American ways. After I left Chinese school (every saturday, it sucked) during my High School year, I kind of lost touch with my Chinese self. I didnt learn much in Chinese school, so there I am only knowing how to speak it, and even at that, it sucks. it took me a summer to go to the Episocapal AsiAmerican Ministry conference (yes, I believe in Jesus as my savior) where I was able to meet up with some other Asians. There, I got a chance to watch the movie My Sassy Girl and watch the Live action version of Sailor Moon (i can upload this series for you all. if you like, let me know) . this got me hooked. I got into Jeon Ji Hyun and started to download the songs from the Sailor Moon show. this kinda was a wake up call for me and my Asian heritage. I used to not are much about my Asian heritage when I was young, but I never denounced it. i love being Chinese, but I guess I got my wake up call then. I started to get into Asian music somewhat. now, after this revelation a year ago, I am trying to get my kicks into Asian culture, espeically my own Hong Kong culture. i want to know more about the entertainment and stuff. i was at Hong Kong last year for the 3rd time in my life, and I loved it. I want to be more of a Chinese person than I already am. a couple months back, I went to Richmond in BC, Canada. that just got me all happy about who I am. well, my current favorite actress is Jeon Ji Hyun because all her movies rock. my favorite singers are BoA and Joey Yung. (I'm still trying to download more of Joey's music) I pretty much am listening to any kind of music. I am a huge nut for classic rock, but I love rap, R&B, reggae, oldies, score and almost anything else that exists. my name is Samuel Lam. I am 19 years old and I am a college student. I have a LiveJournal (check my profile for a link) and I'm here just to get as much as I can from this forum. thanks for having me here. BTW, i got my username from Mr. Bean. some pics of me: (IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/phutmasterflex/Artemis/PHUT4.jpg) (IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/phutmasterflex/Artemis/PHUT8.jpg) (IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/phutmasterflex/Artemis/PHUT9.jpg) Usagi! Welcome (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif) I feel sorry that you feel Chinese sucks. You have to want to learn it to truly understand it. If you don't do that, its like a chore. There is no difference between me learning Portugese, Spanish, or German.

There is no difference between me learning Portugese, Spanish, or German. well, i FELT at the time when I was younger taht Chinese sucks. I was a kid growing up in America. I was heavily influenced by the American way. it took me a while to get out of that phase. the chinese school was boring. but i think that since i didnt grow up in Chinatown, i didnt have enough Chinese influence to make me want to learn Chinese harder. but now, i regret taht i didnt try. I love being Chinese and I wish I hadnt been so "against" learning it when I was younger. I am trying to get myself to be as diverse as I can to as many things now. Actually Phut, a lot of people share the same sentiments. I guess it's like a rediscovery of one's ancestral roots.

I am proud of this, that I never turned my back on my Chinese heritage I know some people that are Chinese, but since they were raised in America, refuse to want anything to do with their roots I have always loved my roots, it just took me a while to realize it thank you all for your welcome. your welcome actually have made me feel happy |

Here's advice to parents?: don't send your kids to Chinese school as they won't want to learn it when they're young, only when they're older.

yeah, but learning Chinese at a young age is key
it is easier for kids who live in Chinatown to appreciated Chinese school at the age versus a guy like me, who lived in teh suburbs the influence is so different |

ive never known anybody that lived in chinatown, thats pretty stereotypical fob right there
now that I think about it the chinese school I went to was pretty special, all mandarin speakers, and I've yet to meet another mandarin speaker since then (that's a peer) but at that age, all I wented to do was run around outside This post has been edited by mndeg: Jul 25 2005, 02:14 PM |
