TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan Premier Frank Hsieh revealed on Monday that he is of aboriginal descent, saying his great-grandmother was from one of the island's indigenous tribes.

Taiwan has 12 remaining major aboriginal tribes, most of whom have been forced into the mountains over the centuries by encroaching Han Chinese settlers from China. Aborigines now make up just 2 percent of the island's 23 million population.

"I have been told that my great-grandmother was an aborigine, but I'm not aware which tribe she belonged to," the Central News Agency quoted Hsieh as saying at a news conference ahead of the Aug. 1 Indigenous Peoples Re-designation Day in Taiwan.

The 59-year-old premier, often tipped as a possible contender for Taiwan's 2008 presidential race, was dressed in a red tribal outfit belonging to the Tsou tribe.

Hsieh said he may be from a now-extinct Ketagalan tribe.

Amid a politically charged debate over whether Taiwan is part of China, some say only the aborigines have true claims on the island as they are its earliest inhabitants.

Like many minority groups all over the world, most of Taiwan's indigenous tribes are fighting a tough battle to preserve their traditional customs in modern era.

The cabinet designated Aug. 1 as Indigenous Peoples Re-designation Day to help preserve indigenous cultures and ways of life.
