^ Yeah, I think his imagination is on par with J.R.R. Tolkien, J.R. Rowling, and George Lucas.
He's the one who basically invented the wuxia genre, in which people can almost fly (i.e., windwalk,) freeze opponents, and perform other amazing martial-art feats. He wrote fantasies. However, unlike Tolkien and Rowling, he did not create a fantasy world for his stories. He mixed fantasy with real history; he took existing history and mythology and then weaved unique fantasy spins into them. Shaoling and Wutang are so famous overseas because he was the first to immortalize them in his works. Unfortunately for him (and fortunately for Chinese,) he's born in China and wrote in Hong Kong. His works have been widely pirated and distributed, and he has never been properly paid for his creativity and ingenuity. That's a real pity. He deserved to be a billionaire. Wuxia is the ancient person in China, they have superb china kongfu , and fine morality. they can help those persons in need of help . fly I think is "轻功",not really fly, but it is a kind of Chinese kongfu. freeze opponents,is it "点穴"? All these are the true Kongfu that exists, there are detailed records in BOOK OF SHAOLIN. But been exaggerated in the wuxia book of 金庸. (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif) Well, wizards, elves and dwarves had existed in mythologies before Tolkien. However, Tolkien redefined wizards, elves, dwarves (and other elements) and invented the contemporary fantasy genre. Since Tolkien, there have been so many fantasy writers and novels (which "rip off" Tolkien.) However, the wizards, elves and dwarves we are familiar with are the versions first invented by Tolkien. Martial arts had existed long before JinYong. However, JinYong added the fantastic elements to his storytelling, and nowadays the Wuxia we are familiar with is the version "pioneered" by JinYong. Personally, I thik JinYong's imagination and creativity are on par with Tolkien, Rowling, Lucas and Herbert. This post has been edited by jareth_chong: Aug 6 2005, 05:07 AM |

jin yong is original. Nowhere in Tolkien's works have I heard of gandalf cutting his penis off to gain supa powa.

Another good thing about JinYong is that he wrote a limited number of works and then stopped writing completely. He felt that he were starting to repeat some materials, so he decided to stop and never write again. He wrote about a dozen novels, I think, and all of them were very different, especially the characters.
JinYong @ Wikipedia Wuxia @ Wikipedia Also, unlike Western fantasy stories, his stories are rarely about the Judeo-Christian archtypical battle between good and evil. There is no clear evil characters in his story. His stories have a lot of gray areas that create conflicts, tragedies, a sense of twisted cruel fate is playing the characters. I have read all of Jin Yong's works many times, they sure are best WU XIA novels ever written, but he did not invent them, Liang Yu Sheng was considered the best before Jin Yong started writing(the new Chinese movie seven swords are based on one of Liang's books). btw, which of Jin Yong's books do you think is the best?
