What characteristics make one a true Filipino - where upon examining you'll exclaim - "This person is straight up, 100% Filipino!"?

Anyone who’s family is from the Philippines are Filipinos whether they’re Negritos, full Malays, Criollos/Mestizos Malays, or Chinese Filipinos. It’s like USA, Canada, and Australia. Anyone can be an American, Canadian, etc. The original Spanish colonists during colonial times and their offsprings born there were called “Filipinos” not the full-blooded East Indies Malays or Chinese Filipinos. I read about this in a history book about Filipinos Americans in Chicago in the early 20th century. US Congress also considered the Spanish Criollos in the P.I. as “Filipinos” not the malays in the 19th century before the Spanish American war. I’m not sure what the Chinese were called but the East Indies Malays were called either “Indios” by the Spanish Friars or “Manilamen” for the Filipinos Malay men that served as sailors on Spanish Galleon ships from the P.I. to California and Mexico or served as mercenaries in China’s Wars under Frederick Townsend Ward in the 19th century and America’s War of 1812 and American Civil War. It was during the Philippines war of independence that the KKK revolutionary group took the name “Filipino” to ecompass all Filipinos fighting for Independence from their already weakened Màdre de Espańa.

HEART and Loyalty/Patriotism to the Philippines.. Whether his chinese, spanish, native, negrito, upland tribe, muslim, amerasian, eurasian, blasian.
A 100% native Filipino can be the most un-Filipino of all. Really, I do have Tsinoy friends and they are more Filipino than some "malay/native" Filipinos in my School. For me, being Filipino is not by ethnicity/race but by heart. Gen. Paua was a Full-blooded chinese but he fought side by side with the "natives". And besides, most of our heroes are actually mestizos(both Spanish and Chinese). QUOTE "The Philippines is our country, it is the land of our birth, the home of our people....Our blood may be Chinese but our roots grow deep in Philippine soil, our bonds are with the Filipino people....it is our desire, our hope and aspiration--that with the rest of our people, we shall find our rightful place in the Philippine sun." Jasmine Trias, anyone? Hehehe Assimilation, not discrimination ... naks. |

1. Anybody born in the Philippines (doesn't matter if their parents came from the planet Pluto), they are Filipinos, pure and unadulterated.
2. Anybody who is a bonafide citizen of the Republic of the Philippines, and who abides by its laws and constitution. Looks do not count. |

Interesting idea. It's like the US. Someone can be a "Proud American" and look like any person under the sun. The Philippines did not have an obvious Ellis Island, but there were many types coming in.
