Not all of Oakland is ghetto. It's just West Oakland and Deep East Oakland (the part of International Blvd. from High St. to the San Leandro city limits). Hayward is not ghetto.

San Francisco. Near Union Square. It sure is expensive but San Francisco has a certain charm that doesn't exist in most other U.S. cities.

I just visited SF a week ago. It was really nice. The roads are really steep and hilly though and the foot traffic (i.e. pedestrians) is really crazy. The drive took about 9-10 hours from San Diego, with some pit stops in between of course.
