(IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/icon_confused.gif) I am Thai, I was adopted when I was 6 months old from Udon. My adopted parents are Americans(Caucasion). I wanted to know if there is any differences between Udon and Bangkok. I don't know much of the thai culture and I don't speak a word of thai. I've been curious about it for a long time, I almost gave up. I am full thai though. Just was curious about some things. Please Help!

Hi,
I've never been to Udon Thani, all I know is that there are different dialects between Udon and Bangkok. Udon is Northern Eastern Thailand, while Bangkok is Central Thailand and all these regions have their own traditional costumes, traditions and so on. They speak with the Thai Isan dialect up there, which is related to Lao. Example on how to say "do you speak Lao?": Thai Isan: "jao wao Lao dai yuu borh?" Thai: "poot Lao dai mai?" 555, you see a difference there. (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) This post has been edited by Jia-Kenmin: Aug 16 2005, 03:59 AM |

I've just had my 2-year work experiences in Udon Thani for 2 years. (Now I'm back home in Bangkok and currently taking a master degree.) Udon Thani, now, is one of the biggest and most modern cities of northeastern Thailand. There're three domestic airlines, Thai Inter, Nok Air, and Air Asia , which made me very easy to get back to Bangkok. The Udon Thani airport is becoming an international airport in a few months (the building was almost done when I left Udon.) I think it's become a port to get to Laos or something. Many tourists, mostly caucasians and Japanese, like to take a flight from BKK to Udon before they get to Laos (they just don't directly fly to Laos from BKK). Malls are everywhere, you won't have to worry about getting things. I didn't have troubles finding CDs, books, etc. And there's a BKK-standard theater there, Major Cineplex. So, I didn't have troubles living there like I had been afraid of. Udon Thani people, with their lighter skins, are pretty beautiful compared to neighboring provinces. Well...what do you want to know more about Udon ? |

Not too much different between 2 cities except traffic, number of building and pollution.
Udornthani dose not seem to Laos also. She is a "central of business" in northern esan while KhonKaen is a "central of politics". |

""""OK, what I have heard that Thai's who are darker skinned like myself that people in bangkok think people in the northern areas are inferior. Is that True?"""" Just curious: you said you are originally from Udon and you have "darker" skin. You may mean tanned skin. I have not visited Udon city itself, but I know the city is just 60 Km away from Nongkhai and Vientiane where people are mostly of light tanned color. South-east asians have skin color that appears more or less tanned. A proportion of people living in big cities appear lighter because they are less exposed to the sun, and/or use skin-whitening cream, and/or have mixed blood with northern asians, particularly the Chinese. There are people with tanned skin in Bangkok like everywhere else. Just keep in mind that those who consider people who have tanned (darker) skin as inferior are uneducated. Don't waste your time dealing with them. These are some photos of Udon city and surrounding areas. http://www.udonmap.com/photos.html |

hey cutebaby1974, In actuality, just like in any other country, there is always a superiority complex especially with the Northern and the Southern regions much like the US. As for skin color, Thai people have an array of skin colors ranging from sickly white to dark brown. In history, those who were darker tended to work in hard labor type jobs. Remember Thailand is also an agricultural society. With the changing times, Thais are moving away from the old agricultural life and more into the modern day with new businesses and techy jobs. These new Thais tend to be lighter than those working in the rice fields because they aren't laboring in the hot SEA sun. As far as what BKK people think about Northerners, I don't believe they think illy of them. Maybe because BKK is centrally located and is the most developed city in Thailand, they may feel that the North lacks the capacity to develop their establishments/cities. From my experience BKK people love the Northern region of Thailand especially Chiang Mai but I may be out of the loop. Hope this post answered some of your questions.

Yes, unfortunately many Thais in fact consider those of dark complexion to be "less educated" and "less interesting" (those that I've been around with and from what I've seen). Lets face it, Thais are extremely shallow and value lighter-skinned and white-looking Thais / half-Thais. There are hardly any dark-skinned Thais in commercials or posters. I disagree with these opinions in anycase.
add: Pun is also right in his post. Because Bangkok is a metropolitan city, the lack of physical labor (such as farming, etc) is contributing to the Thais becoming more white-skinned. This post has been edited by Jia-Kenmin: Aug 22 2005, 01:23 PM |

Isan is the region in Northeast Thailand and the population there are mostly of Lao origin, and the language is closely related to Lao. Before the 1960s, the people of Thai Isan were simply labelled Lao (before a program of "Thaification" took place to incorporate them as an integral part of Thailand, and thus de-emphasizing the Lao origins of the population). The word Isan means "North East". But yeah, basically it's Thai people closely related to Lao.
